SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Anna Patterson's last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. (GOOG) (GOOG) bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system.

She believes her latest invention is even more valuable - only this time it's not for sale....

I think they may have launched a bit soon.

I've not had issues with the speed. The thumbnails in many instances aren't loading, and are being attributed to the wrong sites. I'm getting the impression that their index is old. For instance, the header graphic they're using as a thumbnail on one of my sites hasn't been on the site for months.

I'm going to hazzard a guess that this may be due, in part, to them building their index over time and not refreshing it... yet. I'm curious to see if they ramp up their crawling efforts now that an announcement has been made and how quickly they can sort out the "bugs"... which should have been done prior to the announcement. Something like the wrong thumbnails should have never been an issue after going live.

The only issues I've had, are with the thumbnails, as Dave mentioned. The first search I did on Cuil, was my great grandfather's name, to see if his site was listed. It was, but I have no idea of where the thumbnail of the wrist watch came from.

Not exactly getting started on the right foot. About 10 minutes ago...

We’ll be back soon...
Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.

Thanks for your patience.
Now doesn't even load.

You only get 1 chance to make a first impression. They had an opportunity to capture the moment. A chance to seize the initial attention they're getting. Too bad.

Dave

Currently, it looks more like a "Mom & Pop" operation, than the next big SE that will eventually topple Google. With all the experience these ex-Google employees have, one would think they'd done a little better job. It's a shame that their first impression was such a flop, and now they've lost a lot of potential momentum.

I guess too much early exposure actually harmed that $33 million venture.

My first attempt was met with the error that Dave mentioned. Second attempt gave results but very slow. Also, on the first page only 3 were related to the term. The 2nd page results errored out.

Not a very good first impression at all. They jumped the gun way to early.

Frankly, I didn't like the way the info was layed out either.

I saw this announced on FoxNews.

Cuil is pronounced like "cool", or so I'm told.

It was slow, and then the server said it was overloaded.

I don't like black, and this maybe against thoses with poor eyesight.

but, hey it's new, (can anyone remember Google's first efforts?), so maybe it's worth a change.

Very slow and bad results.

I searched for my websites url and got a website that had nothing to do with geeks or steroids.

And did not get geeks on steroids anywhere. I want be changing over, unless I've got some time to kill and just want to watch my computer screen do nothing.

Their x coworkers at Google are probably getting a good laugh out of the whole thing. Guess we know why they no longer work for Google.

The thumbnail problem is bizarre.

It is untidy, doesn't allow searches by category so looks somewhat dated as a result.

Yeah, Cuil has potential, but definitely it has a long way to go. I did a search yesterday for "ball valves" and no results were returned! Today it's working, however. On many keywords, the results in Cuil are totally different than those returned in Google, Yahoo, et al. In some cases, this is a good thing; in other cases, the results aren't all that great. Does anyone know how this SE plans to get income? So far, no paid links, although I wouldn't expect any for quite some time.

Red face Re: Ex-Google engineers debut 'Cuil' way to search

Their servers did crash yesterday because of the response to al the PR.

As someone said - what was google like when it started? Everyone has to start someplace.

Today, it's getting some bad reviews even about it algorythms... using web page content as the main source.

The volume of sites indexed is low - I did a number of searches on sites that rank well on Google and they were not even found with Cuil.
