Getting listed in DMOZ can be a real challenge..and what about those people who are paying editors to get listed on this directory? is this permissible?

No it's NOT permissible!

In fact, all though there are those who feel it's a good idea to bribe editors to have their sites listed, paying DMOZ editors violates their terms of service and code of conduct.

Quote:
The Open Directory prides itself on being a free, non-commercial and open resource for the Web community. Selecting, evaluating, describing, and organizing all web sites fairly and equitably are key components of the editing process. We rely on the philanthropy of our volunteer editors, and strongly discourage anyone from accepting or soliciting any form of compensation for their participation in the Open Directory. Additionally, we discourage submitters from soliciting or bribing editors in exchange for listings in the directory. Editors found to be accepting or soliciting bribes in exchange for listing sites or unfairly promoting these sites over others will be removed from the directory.
DMOZ editors are volunteers and listings are supposed to be free.

The great majority of DMOZ editors are ethical, highly professional and fair minded. The handful that might be accepting bribes to post links should be reported.

ok but has anyone here ever do this before..saw one project up on a freelance site that asks for listing on DMOZ for a fee and someone offering to do it too..

but getting a listing on DMOZ can be a real pain in the well er.. neck how do we get a listing if these"back door entries is not permissible. People have been waiting for 9 months for a listing and submitting multiple sites and only to fail miserably after the long wait.

How can one know if the editor is an unethical fellow? Just by seeing the site ..?

9 months?

I've been waiting for 2 years!!

No amount of emailing, begging, barganing or threatening will move the process along any faster.

In the end, it comes down to the whim of the Editor. Either they'll list the site when they're darn good and ready or not at all.

The best part about DMOZ is that Editors don' t have to explain their decisions and there's nothing you can do about it.

They are being scammed. I have seen several people approach DMOZ, usually via resource zone wanting DMOZ help to get their money back. I guess there are fools born every minute.

There is a lot of rubbish around about paying to get into DMOZ. Those who make these claims NEVER come back with evidence when asked, but still persist with the claims.

The only webmasters I know who tried to bribe/pay have been permanently banned from DMOZ.

Who would be silly enough to think a DMOZ listing is worth $299?

Oh there are lots of silly people ... and depending on the category, I would be one of them ... but there are lots of cats with no PR (and therefore no likliehood traffic) and a listing there is worth what it costs to get it.

The same guy who pays $299 per year for a listing in the Yahoo Directory.

Between the local little league team, the church tricky tray, whatever the cause celebre of the week is at the rotary club, somehow $299 YEARLY seems to be a concern to people to be in the yahoo directory and ostensibly, if DMOZ opted to go that route, to be in DMOZ, which is still the foundation of the google directory.

As a percentage of operating costs, this is so minimal that you should be listing it under Advertising-Miscellaneous.

It should be clear to everyone that DMOZ has no interest in making money. It is only those who have commercial or ego-driven motivations (guilty!) that seem to be frustrated.

DMOZ editors seem quite content with things as they are; perhaps they are all Zen practitioners?
