Default Can web 2.0 apps overtake DMOZ for topic relevance ?

With the ongoing issues of being able to submit to the DMOZ project - are (or even why are) the big search engines taking it seriously ?

Ok I understand that submission may be dependent on availability of an editor for a particular topic/area - but DMOZ does not seem to exist to help the web industry, more exist as biased search application. Well surely web 2.0 apps can do that!

Search engines couldn't care less about DMOZ. They don't give it any special attention (as they shouldn't).

And DMOZ exists to help people find websites that interest them, just like every directory. I think you're giving DMOZ more credit then it deserves.

That's exactly me point - I think it still does get a lot of credit - and is a great time for the web 2.o concept to emerge as a sucessor.

I agree with sdrury, I also think DMOZ still does get a lot of credit especially for Google.

Webnauts and Stymiee - I appreciate your opposition to my point, and would be interested to understand where you think DMOZ fit into the SE mix, and whether you consider that Web 2.0 apps could hold greater topic relevance to the big players search results.
