Default Closing Down 3 sites - 301 to the 1 left?

I am closing down 3 sites and pointing the domains to the "primary" site.

None of the content is the same, its just that I have 20-50 people linking to those closed sites and I can not maintain that many sites.

I used a 301 permanent redirect. Is that correct? I do not want to get in any trouble with the search engine gods.

Do I now delete the files from the server?

Thank you!

Yes, 301 is the way to go.
It's best to leave the old files up for a little while

Well if the content doesn't match I am not sure how many links will be matched to the new domain, long term. Sure Google and the other SE's may match them at first to the new domain per the 301 redirect. You may get a false impression that it worked, but then a couple of months later you could lose this "link credit" when the SE's realize the content didn't match.
