Default Do search engines follow area maps?

Hi everybody!

Looked left and right, and even up and down, but can't find an answer to the following question: "Do search engines follow area maps, and if only some do, which ones?" I think I have read somewhere a while ago they don't, but I would not mind an answer from people who have experience with this ...

Cheers

John

Wow. What an interesting concept.
Elaborate a bit more so we can fully understand what you mean please.

Hi Tim?
I mean image maps (as in clickable images) maybe, as in:

<map name="whatever"><area shape="poly" coords="coordinates" href="URL"></map>.

I am wondering whether search engines can follow these links or whether you also would need to put standard html links somewhere to make sure the SE's follow the links.

I hope I am a bit clearer now ...

Cheers

Oh, I see what you mean now.
Yes, search engines can and will follow links on image maps. Back in the day, I had 200 websites linked into an image map with tons of text under the image and all 200 of the sites were indexed in the search engines quickly. This, as I said, was many years ago and now it is not considered a good thing to do. But to answer your question, image map links will be followed and indexed by search engines.
