Default Web Site Revamp

Hello all,
I first want to apologies for asking a question that has probably been asked a thousand times before. The company that I work for is revamping its web site all the way down to the hardware. We are using the same domain name but I believe the IP address will change. Right now we rank well in the big three search engines. After the conversion to the new system and website what kinds of pitfalls will we have to deal with and how can we deal with them with minimal losses?

Any information would be greatly appreciated, even if it refers me to another discussion.
Thanks!

1. Use 301 redirect for all pages you will take down. Point to home page or a new page that will replace the older pages and make sure, if there will be any page/s that will be used, that they don't link to any page that will be removed.

2. Make sure there will not bee left any page on server, that will not bee used.

3. If you are going to change the site content, you might have to ask every link partner and other that link to your site, to replace the text.

4. A new domain might be best, as some SE's might not like this changes and penalties your site but, I would not worry much about it.

SEOSEMs comments are spot on.

You will also need to consider an SE resubmission when all is complete.

Thanks Guys for your input! I will definitely take it into consideration. We are just starting to re-do the entire website and want to take the precautions to preserve our rankings that we worked so hard to get.

How long does it usually take the search engines to re-index the site and your rankings to return to where they were before the reconstruction? Or is this a vague question bacuase of the content with in the web site?

What is this? You don't submit to search engines and anyone who does has been mis-informed.

Clarify what?

YOU DONT HAVE TO SUBMIT TO SEARCH ENGINES.

They find you (and prefer to) through links from other websites.

Anyone offering submission services is trying to scam you.

That is a debateable topic (maybe I should start a forum on it!) although is detracting from the lead enquiry - and I have offered my personal perspective.

To clarify my standpoint however I am not suggesting mass submission - which I am inclined to agree can be construed as a "scam".

Optimisation is the key.
