So, I've been very impressed by the new Ask.com ad campaign. I think these ads might actually get people to go over to ask and use the "tools" as they say.
What do you think? Is Ask going to become a viable engine?

Marketing won't work. Good search will. Yahoo has a great search engine at the moment. That will certainly help them in the long run.

Here’s my two cents.
Good marketing campaigns will get people to Start using the engine. Once people start using the engine sites will start getting traffic and more people will start talking. I’ve been seeing more and more traffic from MSN and Yahoo. Which makes me think neither of them are sitting still. But I would love to see ask kick some … no no I’m sorry. What I meant to say is I would love to see 4 engines in there fighting it out. There was a time when all the traffic came from Google. I’m glad that time is over. |

Lots of good chatter here. I'm fairly impressed by some of the new tools that Ask has come up with. It's really an interesting view of search and really offering things that I think people will want.
As for MSN and Google and Yahoo, I think that 4 companies really innovating, will be nice, and hopefully it will start to force these engines to come up with better results, cleaning up spammy sites, and focus on quality and user experience. If that happens, I think these companies will really start to satisfy the user, and the one that does it best, will capture the market share. Anyone else remember using excite, or netscape search, or many of the others that have been out there? Thos that do it right, will get market share, it may take a few years, but that's the way it will go.

Yes, the TV spot I saw with the person evolving from a monkey was funny. Looking at their site I was not really impressed. Yes, they had a couple of interesting features. The SERPs were not really very good, which is the reason we use search engines.
I think old habits die hard. Google has its share of problems, but many have already installed their toolbar and have them as a default SE. It will take more than a marketing campaign for a SE to beat Google. It will take Google continuing to make some huge mistakes. Also, as Google's business model collapses due to competition and the novelty wearing off, they will either need to find new revenue streams or die. They have explored several avenues, but they lack the expertise and find it very difficult to break into other established venues. I think it's a little late for a SE to re-invent their site and have it look/work so similarly to their main competitor. However, I enjoy watching the pie being sliced even thinner.

I am amazed that we settle for such low quality searches. Often on a search you get spam. On some of the keyword seaches I do regularly 7 of the first 10 results will be spam and that doesn't count directories as spam---why bring me a directory? I want information. There is a ton of room for good search results.
