WebProWorld Members,

Happy Monday,

It's a pretty dark and dreary day here. Supposed to rain for a few days I think. But that's ok because soon I will be on my honeymoon and in the Bahamas! Can't wait!

Time sure does fly by quick.

Seems like all the wedding websites aren't there really aren't that good or informative. At least for Kentucky.

If you have a wedding coming up or have a daughter that may be getting married in the future, I definitely suggest saving now and planning early! Seems like common sense but it catches up with you quicker than you think!

Enough wedding talk, on we go... :)

Using Shortened Links (through URL shorteners) An SEO NO NO?

So I'm having a little discussion in another post about linking to internal search results page on a site and the OP (ozsubasi) made a reference to creating URLs of his website, shortening them through a URL shortener and placing those shortened links on his website.

Now, instinctively this doesn't sound like an OK tactic - he doesn't like the LONG URLs of some of his pages, specifically the search result URLs, but if I'm correct, there may be some issues with doing this related to PageRank or a close cousin of it.

I haven't ever really put too much thought into the effect of a shortened internal link on one's website - sure we do shorten our links all the time when we're social sharing and so forth but would other SEOs consider using a shortened URL as a link on one's website a no no?

Swapping site contents over

My #1 site was hit by Penguin, #2 was not. Both are built on the same platform (Open Realty) and I have an idea which I would be grateful for opinions on.

Basically what I am considering is swapping the contents over between the two sites. #2 site is ranking quite well for most of the keywords that I was aiming it with #1 site (and which prior to Penguin were mostly on the first page of a Google search) without my trying very hard. The difference between them is that #1 features all the real estate we have for sale whereas #2 is all about only those which we have built ourselves. So they both have similar information pages and I wouldn't need to rename them, and in fact could leave some of them as they are. In the main it would mean deleting some from #1 and adding them to #2, and likewise with the property listings. For the home pages, I would swap the main content but leave everything else the same.

I don't plan on doing any 301 redirecting because I don't want to tansfer any possible problems from bad links from #1 to #2. #1 is PR4 home page with PR2 and PR1 inner pages, #2 is PR3 home page and PR2 inner pages so I don't really have any "link juice issues". The pages and property listings I migrate from #1 to #2 are going to be "new content" so that should help further with SERP. I'm not concerned about exisitng clients being confused because I can simply email them, and in the main the sites are for potential new clients anyway.

There is no issue over the domain names, because both are relevant to the contents of both sites. There is the added advantage that site #2 is a .co.uk (#1 is .com) and the UK is my main geographic target. So far I can only see possible benefits, and what I need please is some realism and fault finding with my plan.

Cynthia Says is not keeping up...

When is Cynthia Says going to catch up to HTML5? It's been well known for over a year now that , as vital as it once was, is no longer recognized in HTML5, as 'language' is not a registered value for the attribute 'name' of a meta tag.

Just to get it to pass my page, I had to reinsert the tag, as well as the now often debated, keyword meta tag. With the two values missing, my page failed automated testing (these were just warnings, but FAILURE warnings, no less). All three priorities were shown as Passed, yet the page failed because of these two warnings. We work hard to keep up with standards and produce accessible pages. Why doesn't Cynthia Says work just as hard to keep up. Don't they have plenty of people and resources? Or are they simply giving up the ghost?

Why Donuts Inc. Is Banking on ICANN's gTLD Expansion

The days of thinking of Web urls with .com, .org, .net, and the other common generic top-level domain (gTLD) endings are quickly coming to a close. ICANN, of course, made its historic announcement to expand the gTLD program last year, and on June 13, it plans to begin revealing the applications for the nearly 2,000 applications for the new domain ending hopefuls.
