WebProWorld Members,

Poor, poor, Google. Not in the monetary sense of course; they just can't seem to crack the social networking nut. They've tried quite a few things to try and get a Google social idea off the ground. Does anyone remember the animated, avatar based social experience Google tried to push? Or more recently, Google Buzz? We might know about these attempts, but very few others did.

Though they've been met with failure, Google continues to push forward. Which is what makes the journey such an interesting one to watch. Their latest attempt comes by way of a Google Profile page redesign.

What does the new design look like? It might look familiar to you, take a second and really give it a gander.
It looks like Facebook!
I guess the lesson Google has learned during it's long walk down the social networking road is if you've failed in your more unique, and creative attempts, then get "inspiration" from someone else.

Okay, I've goaded Google enough, and to be honest can anyone blaim them? Most of what is on the internet is stolen, or is at the least inspired by what came before it. Even Facebook wasn't the first social network. Zuckerburg simply took an idea that came before and tweaked it until it became the success it is today.

So what's up with the redesign and what are they trying to gain from it? Product manager, Greg Marra, provides some insight into the Google Profiles update, "We think this new design helps highlight the information that’s most important to you, making it easier for people who visit your profile to get to know you" he continues, "As the new layout gradually rolls out, current users of Google Profiles will notice that their existing profile will automatically update to the new style."

Experts have stated the new redesign is the beginning of Google's overall strategy towards social networking. The belief is that the profiles page will act as a nexus for all Google related activity. With one big addition being activity on YouTube.

If the hypothesis is accurate, I really dig the new strategy. Instead of creating a completely new social networking system, simply take what people do through Google and allow them to share it. Considering everything Google allows people to do, there would certainly be enough to share on a centralized page.

What are your thoughts on the redesign and whispers of Google's new plan? Do you think it will succeed, or fail like their first two attempts?

The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and ideas of the WebProWorld community.

Did the New Google Algorithm actually Issue Penalties?

Did the New Google Algorithm actually Issue Penalties?
If a site was "hit" by the last algorithm update was that site actually penalized or does the nature of the algorithm just devalue the site because of certain parameters within the algorithm.

So for example, if you have 100 low value articles (however google is figuring that out) and you have 100 really high value articles written and replace the crappy ones, do you simply, once your site gets crawled, move back up to higher positions OR was there actually a penalty that needs to be lifted through a site reconsideration?

One of my sites was hit and we think we may know why and have been working to correct the issue. Do I simply allow Google to crawl the site as they do or do we need to do a reconsideration?

Site for Review

Lately I've been involved in making a coupon site script However I don't want a review on the actual site. I would like some opinions on the script which is located here Take a look and remember that anything you have to say might be useful for us.

ccTLDs, localization and ranking/traffic questions

I have a few old websites with domains on our country-specific top level domain (.ro) . The sites have a number of inbound links from various countries, but mostly from US and our country (.ro).

The sites i'm talking about are currently hosted in US, so they have an US-based IP. The sites are all in English and aimed at US audience. Been that way for a long time.

Usually 20% from traffic comes from US, and 80% from all over the world. Traffic is mostly organic Google search. However, one particular site has recently begun ranking high in for a particular page and sets of keywords (top 1), so for that site 75% of the traffic comes from UK.

i know that apart from the ccTLD, the IP location is quite important for ranking well in a particular country or region.

Search Results In Browsers?

We have noticed different positions in natural search results on the same search engine but different browser. For example when we type in a keyword on Google Search and use all three browsers Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer the positions are different for the companies listed.

This also happens in Yahoo & Microsoft Search. Can anyone explain why this happens?

Is there a Wordpress plugin for email verification?

I'm looking for a plugin that will verify a visitor's email address before they can download content from my blog.

So say they want to download a PDF I have linked to my site, they will have to enter an email address and will receive a verification email with a link that will verify it's their actual address.
