Who do you blame in a drunk driving accident, the
car or the person driving? That seems to be
the argument that many sites are putting up in various
lawsuits throughout the country. Sites that are
used as platforms, particularly in sales have been
taken to court more times than you could fit in
the entire run of Matlock.
My favorite lawsuit was when Craigslist
was being sued over the prostitution that was occuring
on it's site. A Sherriff from Chicago was wanting
Craigslist to pay them $100,000 for funds that were
used to track down prostitution rings on Craigslist.
This is where the argument between blaming the car
or the person driving when dealing with a DUI crime.
People are going to use Craigslist for kinds of
notorious things. Should Craigslist being tracking
illegal acts on their site? Well of course they
should. But not every single post can be tracked
and accounted for. Which brings us to the next scenario...
eBay has recently come under a
lawsuit for allowing counterfeit
watches to be sold on their site. From the wording
of lawsuit, it leads us to suspect that eBay was
warned about the counterfeit merchandise, and didn't
do anything about it. Which is unacceptable.
The difference between the Craigslist situation
and the eBay one is that Craigslist's
problem was more of a broad and general happenstance.
They can't have people tracking every single post
every minute of the day. However, if attention is
brought to something illegal occuring on their site
then it's should be within the law to have them
take it down. Which is why less sympathy is being
directed towards eBay
Do you see a difference in the two scenarious. Should
these sites which are used as platforms for sales
be completely responsible for what is occurring?
Should perhaps a warning system be implemented so
they have plenty of time to take something down
before a suit is filed?
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and

Root Domain redirect?
I recently came across the following statement.
"Root Domain is not redirected - Google sees your root
domain as a completely separate website Redirect your
Root domain (website.com) to your web address (WEBISTE
- Web and Interactive Solutions Technology and Expertise)
to avoid Page Rank dilution and duplicate content penalties."
Is this true?
If so, how do I go about redirecting the site? My hosting company says it needs to be done manually by putting code into the website?

http://www.mefo.com/
Just officially launched my new website that allows users to rate people good or bad, and search for anyone before they have any dealings with them.
It is unique as the profiles of people are submitted by people that know them, not themselves which are usually bias.
I would really like some feedback as to whether site could be a winner or not. |

Looking for some software that will design this:
I need to add a gallery or slideshow that dsiplays all the top stories, new stories, new vids etc. that is similiar to this one displayed at the top of this page:

If I at least knew what these modules or widgets were called, I would have a better chance at figuring out where to find or buy something similiar to it.
If someone would let me know what these are called or where to find some software that will allow me to build/manage something like this please let me know.

How to promote a story blog?
I have a client who has a blog which is really a story, written by an imaginary author. It's an offbeat comedy, a bit alterative... the question is, now its setup and running how best to get people visiting it...
It's not a commercial project, so there isn't an advertising budget for it.
Any ideas welcome!

How Much Are You Willing to Pay for News?
Recently the editor of the Financial Times, Lionel Barber, made a statement that most newspaper websites will be charging for content within a year. It is no secret that the newspaper industry has been hurting lately. With so many people turning to the web for their news, newspaper sales are down and the newpaper organizations have been trying to figure out a way to earn revenue online.
