Al Gore, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther
King Jr., Twitter. What do those
four people and Twitter have in common?...They've
all either been seriously considered for, or won
a Nobel Peace Prize.
Yes, you read that correctly. According
to Mark Pfeifle of Christian Science Monitor,
Twitter deserves to be recognized as a Nobel Peace
Prize candidate. Mike McDonald who some of you know
has
voiced his opinion on the matter, and my thoughts
aren't too far behind his.
Twitter is being considered as a candidate for its
role in the events that occurred in Iran post election
(if you can call it that). Journalists were kept
from providing coverage during the revolt. This
led to citizens inside Iran tweeting as the prime
source of news for what was occurring.
So many thoughts concerning the things wrong with
this story are swirling in my head, I'm having trouble
deciding where to begin. The most obvious point
is that Twitter isn't a person. I've read through
the entire list of Nobel Peace Prize winners, and
not once was a 'something' ever
considered. Granted, there have been organizations
win the honorary title but they consisted of people.
A counter-point to that is that Twitter in essence
is an organization of people. However, Twitter isn't
completely used for citizens fighting for democracy.
I'm sure at the exact moment that Iranians were
tweeting, others were discussing Lindsay
Lohan's latest movie. It would be the equivalent
of nominating television for the
award, and to be honest it has been used as a tool
for reporting democracy more than Twitter has.
Here's an idea, how about nominating the Iranian
people for the award? Or Neda Agha-Soltan
specifically, who Pfeifle actually mentions in his
article. These are the people that made Twitter
relevant. Without them, we would have just been
left with all the other non-sensical 140 posts that
sometimes litter the site.
What says you - is Twitter deserving of the award?
If not, then who should be considered for a nomination
for the events that occurred in Iran?
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

htaccess compatibility
I am changing over a general shopping site to a proper directory and have a question regarding the .htaccess file.
Although all but three sub folders will be deleted. there are a few pages that I would like redirected to other sites simply as a 301 redirect statement in the htaccess file. Rather than jumping in and making assumptions I thought I should ask the pros whether there is going to be the compatibility issue.
The following is an excerpt of the new .htaccess file
that will sit in the top file...

When my Mother in law wanted presence on the web for her soap-making business, I offered to help. It seemed like the cost to hire someone for even a basic site was pretty high. I put this together with Dreamweaver MX. I'd appreciate some feedback. I know its probably breaking a lot of rules. |

Twitter has produced a hot new trend: real-time search. There is hardly a day that goes by within the Internet industry that real-time search is not mentioned.
