Since it's Friday I figured we would have a bit of fun in the WebProWorld newsletter. At other people's expense no less, but be honest is there any better kind?

If I say Google Chrome, or mention Black Hat SEO then you probably instantly know what I'm referring to. However, us internet/SEO nerds make up a very small portion of the population. Just how much do the laymen/women know about the world of the interwebs?

According to this video, which was brought to my attention by WPW user Paul Godden -- very little. A simple question was asked to random people on the streets of New York. What is a Browser?

Merriam Webster has the word listed as follows:

1 : one that browses

2 : a computer program used for accessing sites or information on a network (as the World Wide Web)

The video is mainly concerned with the second definition, which almost no one in the video was able to provide. Here are some of the answers given by the residents of the Big Apple:

"Browser is a search engine"

"Google"

"What is a browser!? I use the Yahoo"

According to the video, less than 8% of the people interviewed knew what a browser was. Of course this is all in jest as that was a very small focus group, but it does raise some interesting questions. Just how much does the collective population of people know about the internet they visit? Also, it's interesting to see how people have equated a browser to a search engine...thanks a lot Google ;)

Do you know of people who would struggle with the questions in the video? If so, what steps have you taken to help them stay informed of internet terms, and what they mean?

The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and ideas of the WebProWorld community.

How to keep Google from reading Flash?

How to keep Google from reading Flash?
So now that google can read text in flash, poorly (they say animation will be read as duplicate content for example), how can I keep it from reading the text in flash movies.

My .swf's are ussually near the top of the page and usually contain action phrases or phone numbers and such. We don't want these things indexed. We also don't want them to be used when google is determining what our sites are about. After all our website isn't about our "New Extended office hours" but that's obviously something very important we want near the tops of our pages for humans to see. Humans get our site isn't about the phrase extended office hours but about (well something else I'm not allowed to talk about).

Any suggestions?

Site for Review http://www.carforums-online.com/

I've just started a new forum board called: Car Forums Online and was wondering if anyone could take a look at it for me. I'm brand new to the forum world, so I know its not perfect. Why choose a car forum when there are so many others to choose from? Well, my problem is that I like chatting to people and discussing things that interest me....Cars!

Question of Professionalism

I'm convinced I'm on a professionalism kick. That being said, the professionalism in question has to do with the name of an organization. The organization is one being started by a family member. It also has to do with ghost hunting.

I know ghost hunting is a huge trend right now. Everyone and their brother is starting a ghost hunting group. I think it's great - it keeps people occupied and entertained. The only problem I have with it is some of these groups are/ seem unprofessional. In this instance - the family member in question wants their group to be called R.I.P.P. (Researchers Investigating Paranomal Phenomenon). The ONLY reason they chose the name is so they could have the acronym RIP(P).

To me...it doesn't sound professional and I don't think they'll be taken seriously. I attempted to explain my thinking only to be shot down. I suggested they use P.R.O.S. (Paranormal Research Organization of S....(name of our town)) To me Research and Investigating is the same thing. Paranormal and Phenomenon is pretty close also. The redundancy of the words makes it seem less professional. Am I off my rocker?

Granted, it is their organization - they can call it whatever they want but... if they want people to take them serious they need an air of professionalism. Again, am I off my rocker in my thinking?

Ghost hunters don't get taken serious anyway, then add a kooky name?? I think they'll be hunting for someone to take them serious! I have heard it said to many times, "The name makes the difference!" Does it in this situation?

Twitter has produced a hot new trend: real-time search. There is hardly a day that goes by within the Internet industry that real-time search is not mentioned. To feed this new hunger for real-time information, real-time search engines such as Twitter Search, Scoopler, Collecta, Topsy, CrowdEye, and more are popping up all around.
