WebProWorld Members,

Do you remember what I wrote about June 11th? You probably don't, so catch up if the topic from that day eludes your memory.

I talked about no-follow links, specifically how Google is going to be changing their rules concerning the link attribute. Search experts have voiced their opinion towards the announcement, but let's have a look at some raw data.

SEOmoz has just released an Index update which provides some interesting statistics regarding no-follow:

- Close to 15 billion links (~3% of all links) use no-follow

- 11 billion of the no-follow links are internal.

That's quite a substantial amount of internal no-following. When Matt Cutts made the announcement of no-follow links not passing PR there was some controversy. With this latest data, I'm beginning to side with the decision.

The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and ideas of the WebProWorld community.

How do you Sell SEO?

How do you Sell SEO?
There are various ways in which to sell online marketing to clients and thought I would start a discussion on how you all do this. I know this might be confidential to you but I'm more than happy to share and thought others might be too.

First of all, I know it will depend on the type of client and where you are in the world, but I can certainly say from my own experience that clients want tangible results. With SEO, this can be:

* Achieving high ranking positions
* Increase in traffic

When I deal with clients, I look at the long tail first with a view to using keywords which are also suitable to be optimised for medium and short tail keywords too (e.g. "outdoor advertising" which can also be used for "advertising"). I also target medium tail keywords during this initial stage. Going for the long and medium tail first enables me to show a client quick results and an increase in traffic and then having developed a relationship and trust with the client, we can talk about investing more time in going for more ambitious keywords.

Do you have other methods for selling SEO?

Opera - Uniting the Web?

Yesterday, Opera announced a new feature for Opera10, called Opera Unite. You can read about this system at http://unite.opera.com.

Essentially, with Opera 10, the browser will include a basic embedded web server. This server will allow users to share files and photos, post basic web sites (PHP and other dynamic content are not supported). In addition, developers can create applications that will allow users to connect their computers together in a wide variety of ways, from peer-to-peer messaging to remote file retrieval, and much more.

Note, most of the technology I have just mentioned is possible today through the installation of various software applications, although many of these ideas are considered a bad idea (running a web server is not allowed by most ISPs on home accounts, peer to peer instant messaging is a HUGE security and privacy risk, integrated web servers present an opportunity for DOS and DOR attacks that on traditional platforms are simply not possible, etc.).

One of the extension applications imagined by one of the developers (in a post here: Taking the Web into our own hands, one computer at a time) is a shared Jukebox, where each connected user selects a playlist, and all of the playlists are combined and played back for all of the users. RIAA is probably writing the C&D letters now, and the application doesn't even exist.

Don't get me wrong - some of the features sound like good ideas to me, such as the ability to download files from your computer from anywhere through a secured network socket, and the ability to share bookmarks between every computer you use.

So, basically, I am posting this to get all of your thoughts on this technology. Do you think the availability of full scale, extensible peer-to-peer communication is worth the risk? Do you envision any great new uses for such a technology?

Image Copyright

I was just reading the following thread with interest:- Invoiced from Getty Images for Unlawful Use of Images? And I agree that getty are out of order with their tactics.

However - I am looking this form the other side of the fence. I have lost count of the number of times my images have been stolen. 95% of the time there is no malice (or profit) involved.

But sometimes, I just wish their was an easy way of asking for a fair payment without getting solicitors involved and without having to waste hours of my own time contacting people.. I guess I know their is no solution to this problem and just want to have a moan about it.. As an example here is one of my photos that has not only been stolen, but has had a visual watermark put on it so people know where it (allegedly) comes from!:-

http://www.layoutstar.com/image/bg/1/irish.jpg (click in your browser address bar and press return if you don't see the image)

Surely this goes way beyond what could be considered 'fair use'? Since this site (myspacelayoutspy.com) has a page rank of 5, maybe it is worth talking to a lawyer?

Google Discussion Forum
Should I Continue Link Campaign

There's been so much discussion on inbound and paid links that it's hard to digest it. I have had a paid link on an online college newspaper for years and Google shows them - several thousand of them. Yahoo! doesn't show them at all or aybe because they show up after Y! link check ing results are cut off? The people at the periodical called and asked me this morning if I wanted to renew for the next quarter and I was at a loss for what to do. I think if I stop them I'll get slammed, but if I continue I'll risk getting slammed again if they get tagged as link spam? What would you do? Any comments? Thanks, I'd like to call them with an informed decision tomorrow.

Make More Money with Mobile PPC
Mobile paid search is relatively new on the scene, but it will likely see a rise in popularity with the increasing growth of mobile devices. To further prove that point, eMarketer found that worldwide mobile search advertising spending for this year is expected to be more than $596 million, which is up from the $243.7 million statistic from last year.
