At the end of last week, I poked fun at the
name of Microsoft's latest search engine, Bing.
While I still think it's a goofy name, after taking
the search decision engine through its
paces I'm a bit more optimistic.
I'm not saying I'm going to be using Bing
as a verb anytime soon. In fact, I can safely
say I never will (damn
you Groundhog Day). However, I think Bing
has a fighting chance to carve its own little
niche in the internet. At its core, Bing is a
search engine, but I can play along with Microsoft
and say that it is a bit more than that.
The first thing you'll notice, and I believe the
coolest thing about Bing is the front page. It
looks as though every day, Microsoft will have
a different background image presented on the
front page. Spread across the image, are little
fun facts relating to said picture. For example,
today the topic is about a small province in Turkey.
There's actually some interesting history to be
had if you decide to take the time and explore
it. I have a sneaking suspicion this could turn
into advertising of some sort. Let's just say
if there's a huge Nike swoosh slapped on there
one day, I probably won't find it as quaint.
Once you get past the front page, and into the
actual search you won't find anything too
special. Here is where I must start comparing
Bing to Google.
Honestly, there's nothing in the web search portion
of Bing that will steal you away from Google.
I believe the layout of Bing's results just don't
seem to flow as well as Google's results. The
related searches section of the page is in the
sidebar which is out of place, because if you
scroll too far down you have to scroll back up
to click on them. Also, Bing appears to be too
smart for its own good.
If you type 'Ford' into your search bar, you don't
just receive a list of sites with ranking based
on the word Ford. Instead the results are divided
into different categories: Ford Dealers, Ford
Parts, Ford Parts. This might seem smart, but
it could potentially be a nuisance if you really
are just searching for one keyword. Hopefully
this is something Microsoft will remedy in the
future.
As always I've written way too much, and there's
still aspects of Bing I want to discuss. Therefore
I will be spilling my review/impressions of Bing
into tomorrow's newsletter. What
have your impressions of Bing been thus far? Is
there any part of the site that will keep you
going back?
The ideas presented in the WebProWorld newsletter
editor's note do not reflect the thoughts, and
ideas of the WebProWorld community.

CSS div problem - widths and scrolling
I know it must be something simple but I am hoping that some expert on here can put their finger on what I have done wrong easily.
If you look at my site I have tried to convert it to use
CSS - I'm getting there slowly! Anyway the site is Blank
dvdr disc and case products for duplicators and replication.
- you will see a black colum on the right hand side containing
SEARCH, GO TO CART and CHECKOUT amoungst other items.
The problem I have is this - if I make the window narrower
everything seems to adjust fine until you get to a certain
width then the items within the black column start to
drop to the bottom of the column i.e. off the visable
screen - if you are unsure what I mean just keep resizing
your browser window narrower and narrower while watching
the right hand column....
Any help would be much appreciated.

I just launched a new site, www.ConceptFeedback.com, and would like to get some feedback of my own.
1. Would you use it?
2. What do you think of the layout and design?
3. Any suggestions on how to make it better? |

'Informal' may be an option
Imposing a 'follow the formalities attitude' upon the users of your new site might well be a mistake.
Having created your brand new web site, optimised it as best you are able, chased around to find some inbound links and placed a vast amount of dedicated effort into getting a good return of traffic . . . The chances are you will get a trickle, 4, 10 maybe 20 users a day.
Of course this will change. In 12 months time your traffic will build up, your product is great. . all will be fine.
Reality is that the first few months will be dead quiet. Your product was not be as great as you thought and you will spend countless hours searching WebProWorld for answers.
Here may be an answer for some of you - Go informal
Throw away the standard web form formalities, create a web form that cannot fail, one that your users can post on even if they forget their email address, their location. . . Place a submit form that will even send you a blank email if one of your users simply presses SUBMIT and send them to a page where they can view the message they sent.
There is a big chance that your user will actually read the message they sent to you. There is a good chance they will realise 'it did not hurt them to send this message' Many user will click SUBMIT without writing anything. . and then feel compelled to write 'sorry' on the form and submit it again. This might not seem to be greatly productive, but the day you receive 10 emails from a user and the last one has an email address on it is the day you can send an email back telling them that you really love getting messages from your users, and the day you make 'contact'. . .

tags in non-image images
I am currently building a website using CSS and XHTML - this question pertains to links and images that are not true images.
Would such links and images have "title=""" and alt="" tags in them as well or is this a bad idea.
For example
Is it acceptable to write this line as
Or, does Google not look upon this kindly.
