WebProWorld Members,

So, I am sure all of you were sad when you didn't get your dose of WPW in your inboxes yesterday. That was due to us leaving work early because of this massive ice storm we got here in Kentucky. It has not been fun! Snow, rain, ice... everything all in one! Trees have fallen in every direction and thousands of people are without power. Let's just say it is not a good situation. I hope it all goes away soon!

Our featured post today comes from epep. He has a customer that is acquiring another company that is a competitor. Both companies presently have websites. The company being acquired has better rankings than the company that is acquiring them. The competitor will no longer operate under its old name(s). And the acquiring company will continue to operate under its old name. Epep has some questions about the transition. Read the full post and see if you can help! Click here!

As for the remaining posts, the first wonders how effective are signature links in forums. The second is starting over with SEO. The third discusses Google Bots.

Competitor Acquisition

Competitor Acquisition
I have an existing customer that is acquiring another company that is a competitor. Assuming the acquisition goes through, the following facts are true:

1. both companies presently have websites.
2. the company being acquired has better rankings than the company that is acquiring them.
3. the competitor will no longer operate under its old name(s).
4. the acquiring company will continue to operate under its old name.

From a website use perspective, what is the best method to transition the old page into the new. I would like to accomplish the following with the transition:

1. Inform users that go to the old competitor's website that they have been acquired by another company.
2. Make a relatively smooth transition over to the acquiring company's website so customers will be likely to request quotes from the new company.
3. Take advantage of the good rankings that the acquired company already has for its existing content pages.
4. Eventually have a single website (no established timeline for that)

I think eventually, this will end up with a permanent redirect of the acquired company's domain to the acquiring company's domain, but I'm not certain if we should instate some sort of tactic that smoothly transitions users for 6 months to a year after purchase.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for increasing conversions...is there anything missing? Is there anything there that shouldn't be there? Improvements?

How Effective Are Signature Links on Forums?

I notice that many webproworld forum members use signature links here - which I can understand will encourage other members to visit thier sites - as many links appear to be related to the subject matter of the forum.

Does the use of signature links also help the sites they point to gain better position because of the high volume of text links?

I will do a test - dont worry it wont be on webproworld forum - to see if I can improve a search position simply by contributing to a couple of forums vigorously with keyword target anchor text in my signature link.

In the meantime I'd be interested to hear the opinions and experiences of other members.

Starting Over With SEO

I'm just starting to get back into looking at some SEO techniques for a current website.

I know that the search-engine ground rules are constantly changing and I'm pretty sure all my old techniques are now obsolete. So I need to start over, and would like some friendly advice on where to begin.

In case you care to look, the website is http://www.digex.com.au. The main focus is the OAM2 product (On-line Appointment Manager), so primarily I would aim to drive traffic to the http://www.digex.com.au/oam.php page.

We do currently run an AdWords campaign, and at present our target audience is primarily Australia.

BOTS::: Google Desktop

Background: Desktop bots are small applications that run in the background on personal computers, performing a basic indexing or remote retrieval function.

There is a lot of spiders and bots. Google have some like
  • The well known GoogleBOT.
  • Google AdSenseBOT that scans pages for keywords to target relevant ads to put on a page.
  • Google NewsBOT.
  • Google FeedFetcher
Some forums show which bots that visit their site. Today, on a forum I noted that some of the above bots visited a forum site. But, in addition Google Desktop was reported. I did not know that Google Desktop was a bot, or is it a local bot that most probably came preinstalled with the webserver?
