It terms of optimizing site for organic traffic, MSN has long been forgotten by many.. But then again, they should have known that MSN still stands third of the most visited SEs today..
Well, optimizing a site to rank well on MSN is quite hard if you don't use your infinite intelligence for the matter. In fact, a simple sneaking and cheating on your site's competitors on MSN could provide you some great hints on how to achieve it. We all want to have our site listed on the first page everywhere else. And to have an idea on how to get there, well, the idea is actually on your competitors.. If you can't seem to dig what I am trying to say, just track every optimization activity your competitors has. Study the gathered details, analyze, and apply it to yours.. If they got there because of what they do, then having you doing what they do could also get you there.. Cheers! Have a nice day!

optimizing for MSN is different from optimizing for Google and Yahoo!, there are still common rules that will help you to rank high in any search engine. As a rule, if you rank well in Google, chances are that you will rank well in Yahoo search engine nd MSN as well. The opposite is not true, however. If you rank well in MSN, there is no guarantee that you'll do the same in Google. So, when you optimize for MSN, keep an eye on your Google ranking as well. It's no good to top MSN and be nowhere in Google (the opposite is more acceptable, if you need to make the choice). But why is this so? The answer is simple - the MSN algorithm is different and that is why, even if the same pages were indexed, the search results will vary.As already mentioned, it is the different MSN algorithm that leads to such drastic results in ranking. Otherwise, MSN, like all search engines, first spiders the pages on the Web, then indexes them in its database and after that applies the algorithm to generate the pages with the search results. So, the first step in optimizing for MSN is the same as for the other search engines – to have a spiderable site.If your site is not spiderable, then you don't have even a hypothetical chance to top the search results.I know this much only, hope it will help you in some extend.

Google and yahoo is a best search engines, if your site got much of traffic from both search engines, so there are no need to optimize your site in MSN. it does not yet have a fully operational Webmaster Central for webmasters to submit sitemaps and to acquire insight into their website profile on MSN

Yeah they are right, there is point optimizing for MSN, just optimize for Google and you will rank well in MSN too.
I use MSN mostly for PPC now that they have released the adcenter desktop. Still not working properly, but it's in beta. Bye. |

Looks like this thread has been opened back up a bit. Here's a link to the Live Search Webmaster Forum with FAQs about indexing optimization for MSN.

Optimizing for MSN or Bing might not be a good idea if you want to rank well in Google. MSN is more onpage keyword orientated sop keyword stuffing works for it, but Google is anti-keyword stuffing so your rankings will drop there.

Here's a good tip for getting click-thru from the new Bing Search: Bing now has a POP-UP to the right of your listing in search results. LOOK CLOSELY at the sections of text they grab there Normally it'll be something like opening body sentence, H1 or H2 Header text, etc.
Look at what it's grabbed from a searcher's viewpoint. With a bit of thoughtful analysis you can CONTROL what is seen there, how it's said, make sure it grabs attention, has a call to action. So do yourself a favor: If you are in Bing's results, study how they decide what info to put in the right-hand Pop-Up -- and make sure it's saying EXACTLY what you want it to, and not just page snippets grabbed at random. Some of it may not be flattering, advantageous, nor helpful... |

I could be wrong but I think the key to getting good rankings on MSN is good page optimization. I remember that the first SE I ranked well on was MSN with very few backlinks. This was a few years back so I'm not sure if this is still the case.
