Default MSN Guidelines for successful indexing

Here are some recommendations that may help MSNBot and other web crawlers effectively index and rank your site. We've also provided a list of items and techniques that MSN Search discourages.

You dont have to submit your website to MSN. Just make sure you have IBLs from websites already indexed by MSN.

Technical recommendations for your website quoted from MSN Guidelines for Optimization

Use only well-formed HTML code in your pages. Ensure that all tags are closed, and that all links function properly. If your site contains broken links, MSNBot may not be able to index your site effectively, and people may not be able to reach all of your pages.
  • If you move a page, set up the page's original URL to direct people to the new page, and tell them whether the move is permanent or temporary. For more information, see What to do when your site moves.
  • Make sure MSNBot is allowed to crawl your site and is not on your list of web crawlers that are prohibited from indexing your site.
  • Use a robots.txt file or meta tags to control how MSNBot and other web crawlers index your site. The robots.txt file tells web crawlers which files and folders it is not allowed to crawl. The Web Robots Pagesprovide detailed information on the robots.txt Robots Exclusion standard. This site may be available in English only.
  • Keep your URLs simple and static. Complicated or frequently changed URLs are difficult to use as link destinations. For example, the URL www.example.com/mypage is easier for MSNBot to crawl and for people to type than a long URL with multiple extensions. Also, a URL that doesn't change is easier for people to remember, which makes it a more likely link destination from other sites.
That's what recommendation he's talking about...

oh oh - can someone tell me why my site is not getting indexed? if so does this person mind only communicating by PMs? i don't mind if you told everyone what the problem was afterwards as long as you don't mention the site in question.

it's not a creepy site or anything adults only - no it's just a regular site.

any help appreciated.

Most of the time the reason the website is not getting index is because it simply doesn't have enough links. Feel free to PM me.

I hve found somewhere on the net that you can tell MSN where your sitemap is through a special line in your robots.txt file. Has anyone tested whether the MSN indexation after including a sitemap file and that line in robots.txt dramatically improved? Just curious, because anyway we don't get traffic from msn either.

MSN is more on on-page, so focus more on on-page in optimizing your site. But of course, you will still to do off-page optimization.

Links with good anchor text. I've taken several sites in competitive niches to page 1 at MSN by concentrating on getting inbound links with anchor text consisting of the sought after search phrases.

Even if your site has been indexed by MSN it is still hard to get your keywords ranked. As far as i remember i have read an article saying that if you really want to get rank in msn you need to use all your keywords and it is a form of black which other se's don't like.
But anyway thanks for the info... maybe it can help me a little bit to get rank my keywords.

what do you mean by "you need to use all your keywords" ; is it mean one has to stuff his page with Keywords? as far as my personal experience is concerned, when my site is up in google for a Keyword, it does so in yahoo but it doesn't show same results in MSN so their algos differ basically or something like being up in one can cause drop in the other... so be careful

I suppose MSN gives importance to the on-page optimization more than any other search engine.

Hey, I am really new at this sort of thing. I went online 9 weeks ago and was flabbergasted to be on page one in the search results at MSN two days ago. Beginners luck I guess. In any event my home page is full of text which in turn is full of keywords. So maybe it is true that they do like to see your keywords in abundance. Like I said I am very new at this.

Here is a great resource from the Live Search Webmaster blog showing in detail how to best place keywords within the pages of your site. This is part of a series called SEM 101 that walks through the basics of the best practices for SEO and SEM.

**I can't post a link here yet, so you can find the blog entry by searching for "Live Search Webmaster Blog". It's the first organic search result on Live Search.

Another good link is the Live Search Webmaster Crawling/Indexing forum where you can post threads for the Live Search Webmasters directly.

** You can get here by searching for "Webmaster Crawling/Indexing Forum". It's the first organic search result on Live Search.

Yes, I would agree that MSN is more into On page optimization than Google. Google has moved more towards Site Authority and Site Trust, so maybe MSN will follow.
