Default unjustified SEO practices

Today while surfing for getting information about any product or service we get thousands of results. To remain in the business just having impressive website is not enough but effective SEO practice is also very important. Some people focus more on increasing traffic by leaving spam links on the irrelevant sites. Is it useful in any way?

Maybe it was when different site and SEs didn't notice it.
But if I were them I will disregard spamming because this
will give you a lot of trouble or worst banning of your site.

I get tons of comment spam on my blogs and like most bloggers I moderate the comments. They are deleted before they see the light of day. I have yet to see a single spam link with any traffic or page rank. That should say it all.
