It CAN be used BUT you do have to comply with the rules and regulations that limit (or, more correctly, prevent) the transmission of Unsolicited E-Mails.
Look Permission Based Marketing up in Google or see what people like Constant Contact or I-Contact will tell you in their sites -- and, on the whole, you now need someone like them to run a campaign correctly (and legally). Duncan

E-mail marketing is a form of direct marketing which uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience. In its broadest sense, every e-mail sent to a potential or current customer could be considered e-mail marketing.

Ok, Now that you know that it's another way to advertise to your friends, your friends friends, and also many of your family members there are a couple of things that you need to be aware of.
When emailing to some of your friends, friends you want to send to one person, and then BCC or (blind carbon copy) everyone else that's on the carbon copy list. That way they don't see who its coming from unless you put your email address in the body, and you can email a bunch of people all at once, even people you don't even know. Also when you are going to send out marketing through emails remember to add a tracking link within the email that way you can monitor the results and effectiveness of the email marketing. You can use Aweber, or Get Response for a very inexpensive price to help with that. Hope this helps. |

I would like some more comments on this, I have friends who promote their sites and services via email marketing but after commenting the performance... it sucks.
I haven't tried but my results on articles published on my sites perform better than their email campaigns |

With all due respect, unsuccessful e-mail campaigns are sent to the wrong people and/or don't say the right thing to them. As with any marketing effort, you need to approach people who, in the first place, could/should be interested in what you're selling. Then, you need to come up with the wording that will encourage them to give you an order.
If something doesn't work, the fault lies in the design of it, not the thing itself. Duncan

With email marketing, you get people to opt in to your email list and then you send them emails.
It really is that simple. The problem is, with the amount of email spam going on, you really need to set it up with them opting in to your list. I use a double opt in format, i.e they opt in and then they get sent an email that asks them to confirm that they really did opt in. Also you need to tell them why they are opting in. A lot of email marketers us an incentive e.g a free ebook to get people to opt in to their list. Make sure that it is clear that as well as getting this ebook, they will be getting updates from you from time to time A good article on this is email marketing basics I hope it helps
