Default How To Encourage Sign Ups?

Hi, I'm looking for ways to encourage visitors to sign up as members at my new site. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking monthly contests would help.

this won't work for forums but....

Give away basic information or basic download for free to non members. Than provide "premium" downloads/information for members.

Provide information worth signing up for. I run a large mead-making forum at Got Mead - Mead (honeywine) making, mead drinking, mead recipes. Most folk run there as non-posting guests or registered members, but I encourage paid membership as well by offering patron-only forum boards and recipes that have been proven.

I encourage registrations by not allowing guests to post, only read. Likewise, many areas of my main site are only available to registered members.

I get on the average 10 signups a day, and 15-20 new patrons per month by offering them custom content, chat and a patron-only magazine.

The secret is content, mainly. Lots of unique content.

I gave away a couple hundred silicon bracelets for signing up. It was cheap marketing ($1.42 including postage).

Anyone thought of making the forum interesting, amusing, and full of information?

I own and run a forum and I limit membership and make it awkward to join. I also delete members who do not visit for over two months. It keeps the membership fresh, information accurate and people coming back even if they are not members they can follow links!

But then again I was never normal......

yes it is possible to encourage sign up's by putting some offers, and also put some interesting things and a condition for them to access, the condition is only for registered users.
