There has been a lot of talk about getting a top ten listing in google
Which one is best for getting a ranking for a competive keyword.

And the techniques that was used to get the top ten listing in google, was it,
social bookmarking, submitting articles rss etc.

Blog software can be search engine friendly but it won't help you in getting top ten listing, you need to optimize your web pages for important keywords which may bring you good position in search results.

In fact last Chirstmas for an image search for an image from Shreck my site That's Christmas That's Christmas and more! showed the only return for a Google image search for a still from the film. But as thr image came from a press release sent out to the world's press, I have no idea why my site was the only one to come up as a Google image search!

I am a big fan of wordpress lots of very to easy use plugins, and easily customizable.

Any blog will do what you wnat as long as it is Search Engine Friendly. I would just make sure you go with something you are comfortable with.

One of the best for getting high rankings is blogger.com, this is because it is owned by google, although you still have to work a little at getting it ranked, it has great tools like rss feeds etc and it has such an easy user interface for setting up it's childs play, a brilliant alternative for a free blog site.

As far as i think, A self hosted blog is a good idea.

My main blog is in my sig, and I know it needs some sorting out with formating. But, the one thing I have done is I have used only two directories for linking. I have used keywords that students are likely to be set courses for in search terms. Example 'The Monmouth Rebellion' 'Judge George Jeffreys' - I have blogged the site in historical fiction sites throughout the globe. I've used all of the major Social networking sites and the results have been amazing. My best result so far has been on MSN Live where I knocked Amazon off the top spot for 'New Fiction Books' - Ironically that did not happen on Google, but I am working on it.
