Default Pop Up Strategy for Exiting Customers

Hi, I have a cool flashlight web site that gets about 20 visitors per day consistently with easily over 80% of those visitors from search engines. However, the sales conversions have not been very high, other than I got a real nice government contract for 100 flashlights (YAH!!!).

Anyways, any advice, or best methods and/or scripts for setting it up so when someone leaves the web site, I can say, are you sure you want to leave the site, we would gladly like to enter you for a $50 prize if you'll answer these 5 questions for us, etc. etc. Or something like that.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

The chance of winning a $50 prize is certainly a generous offering for a customer who has decided to leave your site - but why not use an AJAX display which floats over your content and offers any customer a chance to win the prize by answering your questions upon arrival?

Pop-up ads are generally seen as a nuisance - they've been misused too many time by too many sleazy marketers.

Demonstrate that your promotion is well worthwhile by making it the first part of the user experience (but offer those visitors who want to get on with their visit and do some shopping an exit button).

Most of people usually installed pop-up blockers, I think this could be good alternative; Dynamic Drive-Amazon style Drop-in content box

I agree RE pop-ups - I use a blocker, and if by some voodoo a site manages to get past it, my blood pressure rises, I curse and head for the x button, never to return.

Personally, I would use an opt in form in a prime location on your page - people see it, and if they want to join your site they will. If they don't, a pop-up will not change their mind.

I appreciate the shared input you guys, and also I appreciate hearing from both sides of the pop up preference equation. I have to say, since I'm getting a very good amount of traffic, and so far, not too many sales as of yet, I don't mind annoying a few customers with an AJAX pop up or floating ad if I can get at least SOME feedback from my visitors. It would definitely be worth the price. Thanks again.

$300 flashlights? I would not rely or even hope for consistent organic search engine traffic conversions.

You should look into a more targeted marketing strategy.

You may also want to try putting "Best Buys" or "Specials" on the home page rather than the "Latest" products.

love them or hate them pop ups work and 20 visitors a day is too little to have any consistent or meaningful conversions.
