Internet directories & other free marketing methods

What are your experiences about internet directories?
Have they been successful in bringing traffic to your site? Have they affected your Google page rank?

Depends on the directories, however I don't think directories are great source for traffic, but it is good if you list your site to niche/local directories which have impressive listing to gain some local traffic, remember directories list your sites, not pages.

Internet directory is not based on traffic but on the keyword ranking of your site. While Google page rank is based on the number of inbound links to your site like internet directory but you need to submit it to a related site.

We've never seen much more than the effect on inbound link numbers. We aren't in a niche business, though.

I do agree that they are great for increasing your exposure in niches and know people successful in very narrowly focused markets.

The actual PR of the page where your link would appear in the directory would be a big factor in terms of building PR via directory submission. But I always think of it as a long term investment. It may have a low PR now, but if the directory is well-maintained and SEOed, it would surely gain PR on its subpages overtime.

Traffic from directories are minimal. But they tend to be very targeted and collectively, they all add up overtime.

Internet directories & other free marketing methods are very useful methods to get quality traffic by submitting your website on quality sites with great PR containing quality content, it will effect a lot in ranking up your site and your website will be search engine friendly.

wanting more traffic noy only depends on internet directories, also needs good website channels and contents to attract visitors. I have do everything to bring traffic to my website fastcommerce.com including submiting it to many internet directories and search engines but all do not work because few visitors return to my website. And my website has some problems.

I would recommend you to stay away from normal direcotires, and concentrate more on article directorires, because that is where the traffic is.

When was the last time you waded through an internet directory to find a listing?

Essentially, directories aren't that useful other than the linking benefit they provide. If time is a strictly limited factor, better to spend it on other more fruitful marketing activities.
