1) Keyword Research - Make sure your new site is targeting the right keywords.
2) Incoming Links - Make friends, contact related sites & submit to social media websites to build your incoming links.
3) Content - Continue to develop unique, optimized content for the website.

This is a good start.

There really isn't such a thing as a first step. You need to embark on a whole range of questions, but they all come down to knowing what SEO is all about and how to apply it to your website. Even then, it's an ongoing learning experience.
It isn't an exact analogy, but your question is rather akin to asking what you need to do in order to become a good driver. Perhaps the first step is to learn "how to get in the car," but there's obviously a great deal more involved.
However, the fact that you want to learn is in itself a good starting point. It's just that there isn't anything like an A,B,C or 1,2,3 answer.
Just stay put with this WPW forum and ask for an explanation of each word or phrase you don't understand. In time, you'll become as knowledgable as you need to be.

Duncan

PS. This isn't intended to rain on your parade. Far from it. It's the path I've followed since I joined WPW five years ago. I'm still learning, but I owe my achievments in the SERPs and PPC programming to so very much of what I've learned here -- and when I began I knew just about nothing at all.

Unique titles
unique meta keywords
unique meta descriptions
1 h1
p tags
html links

Start with that.

And submit your site to google using their submit form.

shouldn't take more than a week to get the first page indexed.

The first very thing is Meta tags placements and content optimization from my view i.e. including your targeted keywords in the content and in meta tags. So, better keywords analysis is required for it. Get the best keywords to get good amount of visitors and rankings for your web site.

Best of Luck.

As much as keyword research is important, do not start with it if you want to optimize an existing website. Optimize the site as it is first. Only after you´re done with that, start your keyword research.

It's a waste of time researching keywords if you don't have your HTML code right yet.
