Default Articles by Competition Improving his Rankings

<rant>
This is driving me nuts.

I've been SEOing for over 5 years now so i'd like to think i know my stuff by now.

A competitors site is outranking me and it's driving me nutz. All he uses to market is:
1) Articles on free submissions sites
2) YouTube videos

Granted he's written a lot of articles across 20+ sites but come on! He has practically no PR passing backlinks and a measly pr2.

Site has content but butt ugly.
</rant>

I'm not much of a writer and dont particularly want to start writing articles. I have written some in the past on searchwarp, ezinearticles, amazines and maybe a couple more. Any others worth while???

Should i just bite down and start writing more articles? Anyone have experience with article marketing competition.

Even if they don't pass PR there's value in links from content specific articles linking to my site.
