Re: Is this genius ot not?
I think any genius is more about the million bucks than anything viral. It's a twist to actually use the income from selling pieces to drive traffic, but not a particularly genius twist.
Many viral efforts generate good to massive traffic for as little as $50.
This particular effort sounds like the next evolution of The Million Dollar Homepage. A good rethinking of the concept with some originality. It would be a mark of genius if this "form" became the template for a type of viral marketing. By this I mean spawning something like direct mail contest promotions (Publisher's Clearinghouse) rather than ten thousand third-rate knockoffs (like Million Dollar Homepage).
I think it's a good idea. My quibble is the "monkey-see, monkey-do" aspect of the web, where any modestly good effort is copied in the worst possible way. What should happen is a dozen improvements and even more clever thinking to take the original idea, and build on it by imitators. It seems to me there is some potential here for a dozen inventive variations.
