Post Website Advertising in Ireland

I have a client that I designed a website for and now he is asking me to advertise his website online. Does anyone know of a good way to advertise a website online to get more people from Ireland to come and view the website? Would the Irish Independant's (A Newspaper) website be a good place to advertise? I hear it gets a huge amount of hits daily.

If you were trying to drive customers to your website and had some money to pay for it how would you go about doing it?

His website is Prunty Signs - Home and is a sign making company.

This is the first time I've been asked to market a website so any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry I wasn't much help before, jasonweb. I didn't know it was a brick and motar business, and pretty much all of the Internet won't help him all that much. Unless he goes all over Ireland??? Although the Seth Godin's blog may be some help to him.

And I'm sure you typed in such words as "Irish online" for any possible leads.

As you probably already guessed, for the most part he has to do the traditional, outside the Internet advertising. He already knows most of the following, of course:

1. Radio.
2. Newspapers.
3. Contacting other businesses if they would like a sign. Hand them a one-page flyer with pics and what he does.
4. Ad in phone book.
5. Ad on car.
6. Ad in telephone book.
7. Read the ads in the newspapers for small and large businesses who are advertising, and contact them. There are a butt-load of people starting out with their own business, and they may want a car sign. Ask if they know of anybody who may be interested, for more leads.
8. Carry the flyers with him wherever he goes. If he sees a possible prospect, hand him one.
I do that with cards. I sell dating / sex advice books for men and women. I hand my cards out to mostly guys who are looking at women, and they have this look as if to say: "What in the hell can I say to her?"

There are many more, but if he can't get anywhere with the above, he should consider looking into why he can't get the kind of sales that is expected, before doing anything else.

Search Engines:

Google adsense & adwords.
MSN
Yahoo
Ask
Altavista
Sprinks
Inktomi
Findwhat
Enhance
Interactive
Goto
Excite
Overture
Looksmart
a9

Business message boards and blogs in Ireland. Type the appropriate keywords in to find such places. Do the same with "businesses in Ireland," and other word variations.

ValueClickMedia

Also, do a search on "pay per click." But, of course, find one that caters to Ireland.

But tell him to be careful, because over 50% of them will rip him off. Pay no more than $50 at a time. No more!

When in doubt about a service, type their URL in, and there are usually posts about them on message boards.

Price can range from ten cents, all the way up to a buck. The more he wants to be shown, the higher he has to pay.

Do a search for "online magazines in Ireland," and other variations. It's what it states...an online magazine. Like ivillage, and Askmen.

Do you have a version of Yell.com in Ireland?

Adengage & Adbrite. He should make sure to remember to ask them to target for potential customers in Ireland. Why pay for ads that go all over the world?

Fastclick

Do a search on "advertising in ireland," and other variations.

Online newspapers in his area.

Online classifieds for businesses in his area. Do a search for such keywords.

Have him call or go in person to businesses in his area and ask them if they are able to advertise successfully online for potential customers in the area. If so, where?

Post this question also over at sitepoint.com, and other such boards.

On and on...

No offense, but tell him to put on his thinking cap. It ain't that hard.

Another thing that will help the web presence for local searches is to link the company address (with appropriate keywords) on the site and using local terms, ie Wicklow Sign Maker, Banner Printing Ireland, etc. in global or general type directories.
