Default Which page should we have sites link to?

Hi I am having someone get us links for the keyword "binding machines" but do not know if I should have the link url to the homepage or our binding machines page. The only reason I wouldn't want to link to the binding machines page is because we will probably change the url eventually.

Any thoughts?

My thought: never, never, never change a URL.

If you accept that, then there's no reason not to link to your binding machines page.

:-)

I disagree. I think that if you are setting up links for "Binding Machines" then you would be better off linking it to a specific page which is just about Binding Machines.

If you do a link exchange for something which is not as specific to a particular page or product and more of your business lets say "office supplies" then I think link for your broad business terms to your homepage.

Our website is Fashion jewelry, body jewelry, costume jewellery. I make links for these main catagories to the home page and then I try to set up more specific links to other pages to help them such as "Fashion Necklaces" I would ask for a link to our catagory page in our "Fashion Necklaces"

I agree link to the specific page in this case. If you change the URL you better have a good reason. And if you do then you will just need to set up a 301 redirect from the old to the new.

I want to put it on the binding machines page but I know we are getting a new infrastructure soon and I know that url will change within the next 3 to 6 months.

Does the 301 redirects reduce the benefits of the links at all? I know we have 301 redirects from previous urls so I'm wondering...

Well if your changing then your changing. Going forward after the architecture change is made you should link to the correct page, but for now maybe just link to the home page.

The 301 redirects should work fine, but I would wait on your major link building efforts until you have your website set up to your liking.
