Default Are you a liar? If not then how come a marketer?

Isn't all marketers a liar? Did you lie, what are the lies?

Lie 1: Total visitor count, I start it at a very high count as it gives a good impressions.

Lie 2: Total download.

Lie 3: Total user online.

Marketing and Promoting a Website

Quote:
"Marketing is not the dubious art of separating the unwary consumer from his loose change. While it encompasses the arts of selling, merchandising, promotion, and advertising, marketing is these things and much more besides. Marketing is concerned with all the exhilarating big things and all the troublesome little things that must be done in every nook and cranny of the entire organization to achieve the corporate purpose of attracting and holding customers. This means that marketing is not just a business function. It is a consolidated view of the entire business process."
From; "The Marketing Mode" by Theodore Levitt, published 1969

Nestled in the wisdom expressed in this quote is an admonishment for anyone that approaches marketing from a "let's take a shortcut" mode, including spammers and "Black Hat" SEOs and all Search Engine Optimizers. Note that this book was published decades before the US Government breathed life into the Internet, yet it retains timely value, even in the introductory paragraph.

AjiNIMC, I know you most probably posted; "tongue-in-cheek" but I had to put my 2 cents in for what it may or may not be worth.

I speak of theories when I am in a conference but in reality you are into a new theory every single day. I am not saying these things are not true and I do not follow it, I do but none is a true congressman or a communist. Theories are either applicable for congressmen or communists not for both.

The intentions of lies are not to cheat but to get the extra edge. Its not you who do it but the market and business demands for it. You may want to try this http://www.allmarketersareliars.com/. I am sure many will agree.

Marketing is touching people's emotions. Not a lie to make your self (or your product) look better. Almost all buys are based on an emotion. It´s the marketers job to touch the emotions that relates the buyer to the product.

But that´s just part of a marketers job. It´s also needed to reach as many people as possible.
