Default Web Promo: Directory Listings..??!!??

I have learned that some of the best marketing efforts your can ever do is get your sites listed in various directories. Fine I buy that. But It is hard. For example. How do you get in. I have submitted to Dmoz ages ago without luck. Recently I had the nerves to resubmit to still nothing.

Any advice on how to get into directories.

I even went through Zeal's initiation humiliation test. It took quite a while since I didnt really read their guidelines...only to find out that my site didnt qualify. It was too commercial. I bet half the sites there are more direct commercial than mine.

So. How to get to directories and do you guys know of good and easy to "get IN" directories.

Thanks,

Default Thanks BUT

Thanks. I am still left dry how to get listed at Dmoz. Is there a trick other than following the sub directories til the very "end" and then adding your suugessted site and be good and wait and not resubmitting.

I have tried that and my site is very fitting and narrow on the subject of outdoor advertising but still no luck. I have even linked to dmoz for months.

Please help anyone with some advise.

Thanks,

- Robban

You should be mindful that there are many reasons for not being listed "yet".

1. No editor in Categories submitted to and awaiting review by someone not directly responsible for that Category.

2. The reviewing editor move the listing to another more appropriate category.

3. Your site did not meet DMOZ guidelines - and was summarily deleted... are a few

If you are having difficulty getting listed and wish to -- might I suggest reading the guidelines and following them "verbatim"... admittedly there are still no guarantees for acceptance.

FWIW I've heard that some areas of DMOZ are either severely neglected, or dominated by greedy editors.

I personally think if all else fails... cheat. Sort of :)

Look through the most relevant section for your website, and see if there are any dead domains listed. Do this for related categories if need be too. Once you find at least one dead domain, go register it and point it to your website. Instant listing.

From what I understand, the domain penalty only relates to pagerank. The original poster was asking about a listing in DMOZ. So this is a valid strategy for getting listed in DMOZ. If the buyer happens to get the domain soon enough after expiration, they might get around Google's penalty. Either way if you don't care about page rank then IMO it doesn't matter.

There are a few other directories that are easier to get into other than Zeal, Gimpsy is one that comes to mind. My site is too commercial to get into DMOZ.

Default DMOZ - too commercial...?

Thanks. Rasputinj, Did you perhaps mean that your site is too commercial Zeal... ? That I buy because just about every site is. But for Dmoz. I just looked in the computer shopping category and they are all commercial shopping sites. I tried to look at your site (which I presume is about computer shopping) but I gave up after I crashed explorer twice while clicking on your link. (i'm on a mac, OS 9.2 - Explorer 5.1 if you care)

Can a site be too commercial for dmoz. I thought a site can be as commercial as it can be as long as it is relevant to the subject matter..no?

I like that idea - in fact as soon as I read it, I charged off trying to find dead links(!) but am now back with the question :
Is there a way to automatically search a page for dead links? It seems a bit laborious to manually test 100s of pages.
Thanks
David

Yes - I use this little program and it's great:

Xenu Link Checker (freeware)

thank you very much minstrel - that is a good little tool. Now the difficulty seems to be finding dead links whose domains are actually available to register. I actually found one that was available yesterday but someopne else must have grabbed it as it became unavailable while I was procrastinating.

Which leads me to my next question! Or rather next request for programs or websites that can do any of the following:

1) Test hundreds of domain names for registration availability simultaneously (I could only find ones that did a max of 10)

2) "Watch" domain names for availability on a large scale (I know most of the registries seem to offer this but it seems expensive esp for several hundred domains)

Thanks again for the last tip!

Dave
