Default Help and advice for brand new site

I have a very new site page rank zero with no back links.

It is a website directory where visitors vote interactively (like Digg) for sites they like. So the Best not the necessarily the biggest become top

It there are some social aspects in that members can comment and make friends etc.

Members can submit their favourite websites interactively
Webmasters can get the html to link to their particular entry to encourage their visitors to vote for them. Which hopefully will provide me with back links.

The name of the site is 2 words joined together to make a unique word
I’ve sort of made the tag line Website Charts - Powered by People

The keywords and phrases I was going for are
“the unique name” - hopefully through branding some people will search for this in the future
website
web site (I understand this is searched for more than the one above)
top
top web sites
best
best websites
charts
voted

Those keywords are not really searched for as much as the ones below.

I have categories which are internal links
Business
Game
Health
Shopping
Web
Kids

I like “Powered by People” but neither word is one of the keywords I was going for so I’m wondering if I should change it..

Ideally search engines would find the category pages and list those also.

I’ve added a few “cool” sites per category to get us going so what now?.

I’ve emailed a couple of my favourite sites saying I’ve added you to ------- website charts and explaining what its about etc. and that I’m new and scouting for links into my site.

What is my best way to start getting noticed? What would you suggest?

Start posting in forums, asking for a site review. The same time you can begin submitting in web directories.

Find a great list of directories here: http://www.123promotion.co.uk/directorymanager/

Make a press release about it. You can say it's a good new service for the people. And use wise keywords in the title of that press release.

Thanks for the feedback I'm doing as you say, although I'm a little wary of submitting to to many directories
