I submit my articles to Sitepoint.com and do no self promotion in them but still reap great rewards for my efforts. They give you a bio where you can promote yourself including linking to your website. The benefits of this include:

1) Lots of traffic. Their website is so popular, and thus their articles are read by a large audience, that you can expects hundreds if not thousands of visitors to visit your website in the first months after you publish it. You'll get a steady traffic of residual traffic after that.

2) High PR links. I have two articles published (with a third on the way) and one article is a PR7 and the other is a PR6.

3) An excellent reputation. Publishing an article on SitePoint that offers great new information or insight will make you look like an authority to your readers.

4) They pay you. :)

Usually the things I do are kind of breakthrough. It means I don't have self-promote, I just share the new experience I got in this or that field - and those who are really motivated with the topic (hence those who are targeted) they look for the resource box.

And resource box has the URL to the site. ;)

Default Generating Website traffic through article submissions

I have experienced considerable increases in Website traffic by authoring and submitting articles to free online submission sites: EzineArticles.com, Article99, ArticlesFactory, GiveMeArticles and GoArticles. I also generate an RSS feed (using FeedForAll) and re-submit to online distribution sites via RSS Submit. As a previous response indicated, the article content itself is not self serving, but the "About the Author" section contains a link back to whichever site I am promoting.
