About researching domains

Hi there, This is probably the wrong area, but if anyone can assist Id be grateful.
Where can I search domain names that I may want to register without the site Im on capturing the names Im researching.
I understand that some sites keep track of searches and may well gazump you.
Maybe Im paranoid - but any suggestions towards a reputable site for name research and registartion.
I would need to move the name to my own host later.
