Portable Music Players report</u> [clients only], we spent some time talking about the value of Apple's proprietary iPod docking interface. Apple's been doing a great job encouraging other companies to build aftermarket accessories based on the proprietary dock, effectively locking non-iPod devices out of the MP3 player aftermarket -- and thereby making the iPod even more attractive.</p>
This has been especially true in the automotive space. BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Ferrari are all offering or planning to offer a proprietary iPod docking kit for their cars. When we published our report in May, only GM had announced a non-proprietary line-in port in their cars. </p>
Well, <u>
VW is following suit</u>. They'll be offering a USB connection rather than a simple line-in, which is better -- unlike line-in, USB should allow consumers both to control the music through their car stereo and also to charge the player while they listen. It's a very encouraging move for everyone not based in Cupertino.</p>
VW will continue to offer the iPod dock as well. Both the iPod dock and USB dock options will cost 195 euros.</p>
