In case Sky thinks putting a DVR and a network connection into their HDTV STBs is impressive, BT is
doing them one better. When the BT IPTV service launches next year, their STBs will have not just a network connection for the IPTV, and a DVR, but also a DTT receiver -- and they'll layer network DVR on top of it all. Why you need both a hard drive DVR and network DVR is a little beyond me. (And how they'll get consumers to understand all those acronyms is even further beyond me. This industry needs to ditch the alphabet soup, and soon.)

Of course, this being BT, with their track record of delayed launches and their lack of TV experience, I'll be impressed if they just get the IPTV part out the door on schedule.

Sky, care to up the ante again? How about turning that HDTV STB into a wi-fi router with VOIP capabilities, and becoming the first satellite operator to hit the triple-play market? Now that'd be impressive.
