ctabuk, thanks for your generous offer!

please take a look at one of our sites, www.helandermetal.com

we have managed to get it from absolutely no listings whatsoever a year ago to approx. #34 in Yahoo, approx. #61 in MSN and approx. #141 in Google (for the keyphrase "metal spinning").

I'd be very curious as to your inputs on how we can move up! especially in Google I noticed that there are lots of sites listed before ours that are not even related to our primary search term!

my email is jim@winpath.com

David - I'm curious to see what your report says. I'm doing okay at Yahoo, but google is not really doing much. Interested in helping?? Email me at webmaster (at) biggerpockets (dot) com.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi,

Can you take a look at this one: http://www.coolfitwear.com. I just opened this site about 9 weeks ago, and I'm a newbie to e-commerce. My page rank is 0, but on a positive note I've been making sales on a consistent basis starting about a month ago. I'm using Google AdWords, but I'm also using some guerilla marketing tactics -- getting the name out there on Message Boards, event marketing, etc.

I'm curious to see what you think. I got a trial version of WebCEO, but I haven't really looked at it. If you think it's worth going through the exercise, I'll try it.

Thanks,
Sharon

Done, but I had to really go with the tag keywords 'Sports Performance Apparel' - Now I don't think that that is a common search term, but check out your competitors sites and post back here with your thoughts and findings David

Default Question About Results

David,

First, thank you for sending me the report on our domain. After just a quick review I see that we have done a lot of things right (kinda wish you'd found more problems so I'd have a bunch of improvements to make and get a bump!)

On page 18, the report says,

Yahoo.com directory does not link to your web page "http://www.helandermetal.com/" although it could be important for a top ranking on Google.com for the search term "Metal Spinning". You should try to get a link from Yahoo.com directory.

Yet, when I go to Yahoo and search on "metal spinning" our site comes up on page 4 at position 34. Am I missing something or is the report wrong about this?

Finally, I'm just curious...are you in any way affiliated with the tool you used to generate the report, Internet Business Promoter, or the company that produces and/or markets it?

No I am in no way conected to IBP. It is a tool that I bought and have used for years. I pay for annual top ups so I thought, Heck, why not put it to good use. But that was a reasonable question to ask, had there been a conflict of interest I would have said.
Yahoo Directory is totally different to Search Engine results. Now if IBP are sying that you are not listed in the Yahoo Directory, it could be that they have access to the 'paid for subscribers list' I really don't know. The idea of my doing these reports is really to highlight the top 10 competitors, then by doing a simple "theirsite" in a search box it lists the Directories that they appear in. Then it's back to mundane manual 'list my URL' Hope this helps Cheers David

I knew it was IBP, you are as big an addict as am I.
I read all of page one of this monster thread, so I may have missed this answer on page 2.

You move to IBP 8 or still using 4.0.
I moved to 8 when they updated, but still have the beta running.

Cosmetically much better, and easier to track projects from start to all the involved steps they offer, but generally the same package.

I love IBP as you do (end commercial), but dont use it much since .... "knowing the time doesnt change it", so why concern myself too often.

Just my first chance to say congrats on MOD, you offer an awful lot to the job aside from knowledge.

You are perpetuating the myth about brits being charming.

Thanks Hoptoo, actually I find the Beta version less reliable than 4 - but I'm using both, it is so quick to do a report. Cheers David

Hi, Done and e-mailed - The word Insurance gets used a great deal, but it might just be that your competitors do the same, I've not had to time to read the report, it came in so quick, I went for a record in and out 45 seconds!!

I did notice IBP 8 missing alot, I thought it was due to the Yahoo changes of late.

I never thought to revert back and see if it was the Beta causing it.

I had offered the same free-report service as a "client lure" on my site back when I still thought my website was an efficient way to find them.

I dont thnk your dropdowns work in Firefox browser.
Something to look at.

Perhaps when you fix that change them to CSS drops instead of JS.

Yes those dropdowns gave IBP problems as well. I located the top competitors under the search term 'Family Law in Winsconsin' and these without the www being typed are lawmoose.co, wisbar.org collabdivorce.com kellyabermehl.com & murphydesmond.com
If you trace these sites and check their links "lawmoose" for example it will give you an indication of where they are Directory listed. Fix the site and come back to forum. David

It sounds like your report would help me as well. I have recently added a lot of products, and some content, and I am concerned about getting too spread out. I am looking for tips on enhancing my natural nutritional supplement and home health care products without sacrificing my existing ranking on massage related and heat pack listings.

Default Permission Based Marketing - Infopreneur site

The site is up and updated daily [after two years off and on development], and now I am trying to be a marketing person. Not easy for a geek. But there are no jobs anymore for geeks :-).

My research showed that email that was not 'opt-in' was spam, so I have ordered postcards to mail key decision makers. Also stationary to send reports to newspapers etc and anyone else who might want to buy my web site services.

I have ordered books by H. Skip Weitzen to gather further marketing insights

Any other ideas about marketing, or ideas about 'Permission Based Marketing' would be appreciated.

You could send info to my email in the profile or Zac@DoorCountyTraditions.com

Great stuff. Number Two on Google for the search Door County Vacations, So I've done a Yahoo for you. But talk first!!! Don't go diving in making changes, or you could mess up on Google!!

Done, but I need your E mail address. Now with this one you have as your keyword Government Bid - You really need to work on pages and Search Terms, I opted for Federal Government Contracts.

Done, same thing E-mail address is required.
The URL address and the subject matter are totally unrelated. Your Search Terms need to be really looked at. I did Reproduction Oil Paintings - But I'd like to see - Old Masters as New etc -

ctabuk, Thanks for your time and comments.

I don't generally mess with my content to frequnetly. I take my time.

I have noticed that in the last few weeks i have been bouncing around alot in Google for 'Door County'. I'm sitting around 180 right now, i was at 52 just recently before that. Since, that same shift has happened 3 times in the last 4 weeks...I figured what the heck give up on that term for a bit and work on another. I reorganized my left navigation around so that Real Estate was higher and Entertainment was lower.

But thats it except for some recip links from this forum.

I look forward to getting an email from you to see what you have dug up!

Once again, thanks for all your time.

sincerely, Zac

Default Markets and how your website can open them

Very, very interesting....

The report shed some light on a few issues, but also raised a few more questions.

Apparently i over optimized my file system. Though it does make it easy to keep track of all my files.

I'm going to have to print out my home page and hand edit it against the various other elements.

I have been intending to do a revamping of the whole look-and-feel starting around the end of sept. I guess i will begin the thought process a bit earlier.

Thanks.

I will try and get over to your forum (which looks very nice!) in the next few days and dig around a bit. But, i suppose i should take a more detailed look at all of the elements that you have pointed out.

The program you used reminded me or web pro gold. But its formatting was much nicer. I will have to take a look at that as well.

Have a great day!

Done and e mailed. Now, this site has some potential, but like so many sites I review here it has been based on the input of the designer. The keywords are based around cottage rental in Nova Scotia, and very lovely it looks too. The keywords needed to be Nova Scotia Vacations, that is what I would search if I was thinking of taking a vacation there. Stop thinking (ALL OF YOU) about how technically correct your site is, think SALES. Think about what the first person to view the site will see. In this case I would start it with a Picture of a Cottage, the Beach and a sunset, with a 'Would you like to be here? Then Enter our site'

This really is a pic from Nova Scotia, it took me seconds to find. Start Marketing guys.

Default THink Sales

Ctabuk, you couldn't be more right!

What seems logical to us (the person who thought of making the site) and the person looking for the product, is often worlds apart.

I am frequently amazed at how rediculous some of the searches that people use to come into mine. I wnder what in the world were they thinking they would find when they typed in that phrase? Luckily for them, i use a lot of stupid phrases around my site just for that reason.

Here is an old sales tip: Never phrase a qusetion in a manner that a yes or no can answer it.

For example: "would you folks like some desert?" would be better served as "would you like the cherry pie or the apple pie?"....."We're going to have a representative in your area on tuesday and wednsday, which would be a better time for you".........And a picture like you posted might warrent a H1 above it like: Imagine every morning of your Nova scotia vacation starting with a view like this....then below it a H2....Our cottage rentals offer blah blah blah..
you get the point.

Thanks for the analysis ctabuk.
I am intrigued by your statement that the keywords need to be “Nova Scotia Vacation” I never really thought of that. I though that the key words should be more focused and that is why I chose “Nova Scotia Cottage Rentals.” My logic, which I guess may be flawed was that since I am advertising cottage rentals in Nova Scotia that those would be logical key words. I guess the key words Nova Scotia Vacation open the site up to more possible searches? What about the focused group of people looking for cottages to rent that is what I am looking for?
Any thoughts?

Sean

check out your handy overture keyword selector tool:
http://inventory.overture.com/d/sear...ry/suggestion/

THat will tell you what are some of the best words you should be targeting.

Nova Scotia seems to be a very popular term.

However i fount it interesting that Nova Scosha also attracted 683 search attempts (in yahoo and thier partners).

72367 nova scotia
6663 nova scotia tourism
3116 nova scotia vacation
2305 nova scotia hotel
1317 nova scotia cottage
1271 nova scotia accommodation
1103 nova scotia camping
908 nova scotia cottage rental
397 nova scotia rental

Thats a good amount of potential traffic.

You may also want to consider writing some articles or reviews about some of the other keyphrases that people are searching for. Hopefully some of them will rank and help you to gain some additional traffic.

Hi, thanks. When I was selling Life Assurance (many moons ago) and I met a Husband and Wife together I always (cheekily) said, 'May I Kiss your wife' this always got a really odd look from both of them (sometimes a smile from her lol)Kiss means
Keep it Simple Salesperson. It's all about needs and wants, the more simple you keep your sales pitch the more sales you will make. Create a picture with your website and make peoples wants become a need. Thanks Neosite, good assistance. Make your site, step outside from it and ask yourself 'Would I buy from here?'

By the way, i have been working on some of those updates to my site that you suggested (last 6hrs).

THANK YOU for the help!!!!

I'll come over to the other side an' let you check it out (in an hour or so).

Hi all,

So here is my post to sum up the results of CTABUK's report sent to me some 1-2 weeks ago (sorry for delay, CTABUK...)

The report uncovered all the small details we all love to forget and gave me some new ideas regarding the entire page.
So we went through all the alt tags on the main pages (amending the whole site is a real challenge), improved the use of Header tags, minimized the nuber of unnecessary links on our main pages....

and now we are #3 instead of #6 for the term analysed by CTABUK. Of course, the other positions did not become worse.
thanks for your help, and I go back to site improvements.

cheers,
wlodi

Thanks Hoptoo.
The IBP reports give you something to aim at, getting listed. They are tricky, but we can cope, can't we!

Okay, holiday is over - where's my damned present? Huh? What? All I get is this WPW Coffee Mug? Oh well, at least it has a cool MarcieZoob pic showing her halo with Clicken standing over her with a pitchfork ... how do I get the full set? I also want the one with you and Ne01 in your KISS outfits!

I have another for your Mr. SEM / ctabuk:

can you run www.freshdames.com/ female celebrity pictures? » I'm dropping in SERP and want to recoup and recover before I over tweak to a fault - thanks!

Thanks a million ctabuk!!

Yes, that keyword is number 1 for my site in MSN and Yahoo, but I've fallen off the map in Google; having gone from enjoying Top 10 and 20 to be lucky to be found in the first ten pages ... I have a few theories, but they are merely that and with Google being the "flux" site that it can be at times and with so many varialbes, your insight and reports goes a long way to help - Thanks!

Now I have a weekend reading project and I'll likely be less active in the forums next weeks as I *try* to crawl back up out of the Google ditches ...

Thanks again!!

» side note/question - is anyone else noticing that some signature blocks are not appearing here while others are? They seem to be fine in other posts, but not here ... is this a result of a bug or am I missing something? Should I post a query in the Suggestions/Comments forum just in case it is a bug? «
