Default A few...

A few skills that I consider essential:

Creativity

Outside-the-box thinking

Imagination

Professionalism

Understanding of other meanings of an ad

Good grammar

Good spelling

Ability to visualize and communicate the image accurately

Understanding of other cultures / minority groups

There is a lot more involved, but this would be my picks for the most important skills.

Brian.

Default Where to look

I have always found it good to look for entry level jobs in start-up companies. If you are able to afford getting paid very little to nothing then you might be suited for a small company.

There are always start-up companies looking for young talented people that can work for peanuts and still dedicate their lives to the company.

The great thing about working for a start-up is if the company fails then you can move on to another copmany and it looks good to bigger, more stable companies that you have that knowledge.

Ohhhh... we are hopefully talking a distinct difference between "Marketing" and "Sales", right? The difference is huge, much larger than many make it out to be!

Default Marketing Specialists

There are two types of people that go into marketing:

Firstly, people that are genuinely committed to getting to understand the consumer and deliver products and services that meet their needs.

And

Secondly, people that are no good at anything else.

The so called profession of marketing is stuffed full of the latter. Most honest marketing people call themselves sales people. A marketing degree, international or otherwise, will not make you a good marketer unless you have the innate talent to fall into category one.

Default Travel

International marketing requires travel. You need to visit the country and live with the people (not in an American chain hotel), for at least a short period of time.

I think there are two types of people in marketing:

1. Those who determine what the consumer wants and provide it.
2. Those who try to make the consumer want a pre-determined product or service.

You can not do either from an office tower in New York, if you have never been to the nation whose people you expect to buy your product.

peiyu,
Consider yourself as the project, the product, the entity that needs to be marketed.. internationally or otherwise..

Now take all the information, skills and resources that you aquired while getting your degree and apply them to yourself.

Opportunities should become apparent and abundant.

I would also suggest doing research about new markets which are sustainable (in the long run) and trying to get a foot into it, creating a niche for yourself or your company. It's about looking where the demand for marketing is and satisfying that by being highly specialised to target the niche. The reasons why it must be sustainable are obvious...

Thank you for your constructive reply. I have just practiced how to spell marketeer 10 times. Spelling and grammar are things that I am trying to improve on all the time as English is not my first language.
Any feedback is gratefully received. If anyone has any marketing problems which I can help with involving Chinese, please do not hesitate to ask for my assistance.

By the way, I am surprised that so many people replied to this topic which I thought it was a bit daft to ask…Thank you all…
