Art,
There is really not "one thing" but many. In my opinion, the one thing I would do FIRST is properly keyword and meta my pages, then submit it to search engines and directories.
If I were sellign products, I would go with pay per click search engines next.
Hope this helps you.
Tim

Default Writing articles helps;

Greetings:

I've found the most effective to getting more inquiries from people regarding my site is by writing articles on topics I know about.

Also helps in building the coveted "mailing list".

Just my 2 cents worth

Default What if You Could Know Who Your Visitors Were?

We support search marketing specific to BtoB clients. And, we see a curve that takes place in the perceived rewards from the search investment.

This goes something like this:

... Want to be SEEN on the web

... Want Lots of CLICKS to my site

... PPC is so much $$$, how can I get an ORGANIC #1 slot

... How come all these clicks aren't adding up to SALES?

In BtoB, the primary purpose is to drive leads - since few of the Visitors arrive ready and able to make an expensive purchase. Yet, less than 2% of a BtoB's site Visitors ever "reveal" themselves by requesting information and disclosing contact data.

Thus, we recommend to our clients a three tiered approach:

Default .. What if You Knew Who Your Visitors Were?

We support BtoB Clients, and see a regular progression in how they interpret the results of their search investment. This goes something like this:

... I want to be SEEN on the first page

... I want more CLICKS

... ppc clicks are getting expensive, how can I get a #1 ORGANIC position?

... How come all these clicks aren't turning into SALES?

In BtoB, search marketing is not generally effective as a sales medium - few Visitors arrive ready and able to make a complex or expensive purchase. Thus, it should be considered a mechanism for branding and lead generation.

Yet, less than 2% of the Visitors who do CLICK to a BtoB site "reveal" themselves - by requesting information or disclosing personal data.

For our clients, we recommend a three-stage approach:

A) PUSH- use a variety of methods to drive clicks, and opportunities, to a site. This website is filled with a wealth of proven and effective tactics.

B) MESSAGE - once they arrive, present relevant content. The internet affords the ability to be tightly focused in the display of web pages congruent with a product need.

C) CONVERT - there are some powerful technologies available now providing detailed intelligence on the business Visitors to a site - regardless of whether they register or not. These can be used to identify, and then proactively follow up with a site's Visitors.
