Buying Text Links

I'm a newbie to these forums with just a few posts and need some info about buying text links.

Is it better to have a few text ads with great PR or many text links with good PR? Can anyone recommend some reputable firms that sell text links?

Is this even a way to go and would any of you do this? ANY advice is very much appreciated!
