Default ROI on Targeted vs. General List

I have done several direct email campaigns using general opt-in email lists. Results have been positive, but not spectacular, each time.

My question is if I go to a list where specific criteria are selected(males over 35 as an example)does the increase in return on the drop justify the additional cost charged by the vendor?

I am not looking for anything scientific, just other experiences and opinions.

I have not done too much email marketing with purchased leads, yet I do know that with anything, the more targetted the better. So I woold say yes, it is probably worth it to get a more specific list, but that all depends on what you are selling/offering.

If your buying target is in fact only over 35, or whatever the specific criteria may be, then you have a cleaner audience. I would say get your tracking in place and then give it a try.
