Default Blogging For PR

“Blogs and participatory journalism are impacting the practice of public relations.” That line was taken from one of my favorite blogs and I couldn’t agree more.

The blog I’m referring to is called Micro Persuasion and is written by Steve Rubel, a self styled public relations guru. Today’s article will help you get started using blogs as your leap pad to more effective PR.

The key to making a blog work for you as a business owner or manager is focusing on a topic that relates to your work and expertise. For instance, Steve Rubel’s day job is VP of Client Services at a PR firm. His blog highlights his knowledge and expertise about public relations thus making him more valuable to his firm… even though he is not directly writing on behalf of his firm. It is very important to maintain objectivity in the blogosphere. If it is obvious PR it is BAD PR!

Making Yourself an Expert

There are many ways to do a successful blog. What it really comes down to is offering readers a unique perspective and commentary, providing links to unique resources and news and updating daily or close to it.

Add your own spin and commentary … it doesn’t have to be long, just interesting. A good example of a more news-oriented blog with good spin is Adrants. About half their posts summarize “real news” in the mainstream press, but with a sardonic insider feel.

It is essential that your blog bring the reader more than just facts and links. Remember, the value-add for the reader is your analysis. If you can relate some personal experiences along the way, all the better. John Battelle’s Searchblog does this well, he provides his analysis of search, media and technology news in a way that feels very insider. Mike Manuel who writes a blog called Media Guerrilla is skilled at relating personal experiences. To keep readers coming back, connecting with the reader is very important.

Writing a blog is one way to establish yourself as a “thought leader”. A blog will help you become thought of as an expert in your field.

How Visitors Find You

Plan on linking to a lot of other blogs and news sites. Your links to them will in time foster an environment that encourages them to link to you. That’s how it works in the blog eat blog world. If you see a link to a news story in another blog, link and reference that blog along with your link to the article. Never ask for a link, just know that those who give will receive.

You should also submit your new blog to all of the blog search engines. Engines such as Daypop and Technorati crawl blogs with incredible speed, often spidering for new info hourly. More content will also make you more noticeable in these search engines.

Maintain a prominent “blog roll” of your favorite blogs. This is common with most blogs and fosters good will with other blogs. Neville Hobson’s blog called NevOn does a good job with his blog roll in the left column.

Offer an RSS/XML syndication feed of your blog. Then submit this feed to all of the feed syndication directories and search engines such as Syndic8, Feedster or check out RSSTop55 for an extensive list.

Why Blog For PR?

According to a report at the Web 2.0 conference there are now over “4.1 million blogs around the world with a new blog created every 7.4 seconds”. However, there are only about 5000 company blogs. That leaves a lot of room for you to stake your niche and gain valuable exposure.

An article in BusinessWeek highlighting blogs new importance to companies states, “Blogs or websites with content management systems are changing the model for companies, we really now have to engage customers on a one on one level”. With Microsoft leading the way, corporations have accepted blogging as an integral part of public relations. Companies now recognize the need to talk to their clients and potential clients in a more intelligent and unbiased way.

Business blog expert Wayne Hurlbert sums up the reason to blog for PR, “A rapidly growing number of journalists and editors are reading blogs on a daily basis. It’s becoming imperative that a company start a blog to keep up with that trend”.

Case in point; Steve Rubel… Obviously, his blog PR is working to his benefit. Being featured in WebProNews and WebProWorld alone means positive press read by nearly a half million eBusiness owners and managers. Way to go Steve!

Please provide your comments on blogging and PR. Do you have a blog? Has it been effective in driving traffic to your site? Has your blog helped you gain clients and business? Have you had trouble promoting your blog?

Thanks,

Hi,
I don't have much experience with blogging nor do I have a blog on any of my websites yet. However, I have learned recently that blogs can be very effective tools for getting your websites links links out quickly and increasing your websites incoming links. Specifically, it is always best to blog on sites with higher PR. The other key is to include your keywords in your anchor text for the html link as I do below.

Default Blogging

I'm an executive recruiter and started blogging in May. I've had some great success and am enjoying the experience and opportunity to document results. I've been interviewed by the NY Times and just missed a request from a WSJ reporter. I didn't start blogging for PR, but think it's great. It's really been a catalyst for implementing additional marketing tools for my clients. I love the tips Web Pro provides and faithfully read each day...thanks! Lucia

Default Blogs RSS Syndication Online Advertising

Hi I read the article and the posts here.
I have been using RSS technology since
Jan of 2004.

My whole business turned around is all I can say.

Before RSS:

As the owner of a web hosting company I found myself in a very fierce competitive market place and it didn't seem to matter how much I spent on sales copy, traffic or anything else, it never produced sales.
I could not afford Google adwords as the keyword web hosting could run as high as $19,000.00 a DAY to advertise there!

So lots of money going out and little in return.

After RSS:

SALES.

Need I say more?

Look the problem as I see it when it comes to Blogs is the fact that they are just an island like all the websites on the Internet.

Sure you can produce a feed, but then someone has to have the correct reader to actually read the feed.
(I found out early on that Qukonnex supported multiple
formats so almost anyone could read your feed with their own reader or by using the Quikonnex system itself which works really well.)

Now after some research and a lot of gentle proding by my good friend Trina Schiller of the Trii-Zine Ezine I finally looked at what she wanted me to look at.

I wish I had done it sooner.

Not just a Blog.
Quikonnex is RSS media rich living breathing community of online business owners who are all using RSS in the most imaginable ways and it is working.

In just three days of this month I have produced a sale a day for my hosting company.

Needles to say RSS can triple your traffic, your subscribers and possibly sales.

However if you do it with out the community and training and support that I have only seen available at Quikonnex then you find it more difficult to create, maintain, advertise and syndicate.

Remember what syndication did for I Love Lucy or the Dukes of Hazard? How about M.A.S.H.?

Well click the links to see how you can now use RSS to your hearts delight! Without being a techie which the part I liked the most.

Instead of going on and on here is a short list of the RSS technology I have been using since the beginning of the year.

Decide for yourself.

My web hosting channel (blog).
http://www.quikonnex.com/channel/page/dotheq-webhosting

Here is another one I have with the same system different topics.
http://quikonnex.com/channel/page/dotheq

Here is Trina's ezine.
http://quikonnex.com/channel/page/triizine

To see the syndication in action click here.
http://www.frogsearch.com

That channel for FrogSearch can be found here.
http://quikonnex.com/channel/page/triizine-FSI

Notice the feed coming from the Ads-On-Q channel.

Be sure to check out QuikView.

If you are on the fence about RSS. Nows the time to jump off and get yourself a Blog whether it's from Quikonnex or if you decide to build and maintain one of your own.

It's worth it in every sense of the word.

Just remember it is a tool. Content it still king and remain so. Do the keyword research for your business and use them to write articles for your channel.

Works for me.

First of all, thanks to Rich for the kind words about my blog. It's greatly appreciated.

As a public relations vehicle, a blog is very powerful. The ability to cut through the usual series of company filters, and speak directly to the public is not only refreshing, but highly effective.

A blog is a conversation with your customers and the general public. That ability to talk directly is a tremendous boost a company's public relations and marketing efforts. It's very difficult to beat the personalization aspect of a blog.

A blog's readers get to know and trust the person behind the company. People like to do business with those business people they know and trust, and a blog can clearly develop that important connection.

Along with the public and relations and marketing value of blogs, there is an extremely powerful search engine optimization aspect to blogging.

The abundant theme relevant links, and fresh keyword rich content absolutely propels the blog to the top of the search results, for the keywords being searched.

Thanks again for the mention.

Default blogging and pr

I have been blogging for about a year now in various platforms. I also blog for clients and they do this for a variety of reasons:

Better search visibility
Increased traffic to their website- 35% increase for one client over three months
Becoming a thought leader
Starting conversations with clients
Generating press interest

In my own case it has helped me become more of a thought leader in the areas of web strategies and Internet Marketing for PR professionals.

I have a small blog on my site, I mostly post news about changes and updates to my sites/projects and some articles that I write. I can't say I've seen a huge increase in traffic, page rank, or sales..but I enjoy writing so I do it mostly for me.

I am using http://www.blogger.com and found it very user friendly for my clients and their sites.

Here is the point - CMS sites cost money. Most of my clients are start-ups that cannot afford to spend too much money and a lot of them are technophobes.

So, I design them static sites and give them a blog with a little bit of training where they could then update the sites themselves.

I found that you need to know html and go into the code if you want to set up the template but in general templates are available which you could use if you start out.

A sample of one such blog that returned great results is http://www.africatravelmart.com/realestate.html

Launced February, first sale in September. Take into account that we are targeting the International property market and that it does take time for clients to travel to view properties in South Africa.

Setup of the blog was done - agent trained and he is now updating the blog himself - less work for me. All I do is then concentrate on the positioning in the engines.

We added RSS and voila!

My own site which focus on mobile telecoms is doing just as well and I received direct enquiries from it already - but it is a lot of work to maintain and update it.

Great for news and we also use it for product features, special offers etc - some are of opinion that one should not direct sell on a blog but for me it is working. We, of course cover articles as well.

My biggest problem is getting clients to realize the importance of it and provide content to update the blogs with.....some technophobes cannot be convinced to do it themselves....

It surely is a great lot of fun though!

Default Thanks for the mention!

Rich, thanks for the mention.

I enjoyed reading your article, good review!

To briefly answer one of your questions: Has your blog helped you gain clients and business?

Since I started seriously blogging last July, I've found that what I'm writing in my blog has directly resulted in contacts with people that otherwise just would not have happened - people have read stuff and contacted me. Likewise, I've visited other bloggers, left comments on their blogs, some of which has resulted in offline contacts.

The blogroll is important!

Can't offer a better example of what a blog can do. Why does that work? Like all things in communication, if you have somethign to say that others find interesting, they'll respond in some way.

Over here (I'm in Amsterdam), blogging isn't as mainstream yet as it is in the US. That means, from a PR blogging point of view, opportunity!

Default RSS vs BLOG

Quick Question

I am confused about (Really Simple Syndication) RSS and Blogs...

How do the two work together? Can you use an rss feed from one source and put that information on your blog, and can you send your blog entries to an rss feed to appear on another site, blog, email client, etc. (that is an rss aggregator).

Also, I haven't paid too much attention to blogs until reading this great article today. Now I am confused by what blog solution to use.

I am looking for something customizable.

I took a look at Blogger and see that at the top of each page there is a link to another blog at the top of each page called "Next Blog". I like blogger a lot except for that one feature. Does anyone know if that can be disabled or not?

Theresa and anyone interested a couple of good links I found can be found here:
http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm

http://www.elise.com/web/a/an_overvi...ols_market.php

Anyone's advice on where to start would be greatly appreacited.

Thanks
Eric B
