Value of Press Release?

Hello Everyone,

I see the post asking for sites to submit a Press Release. I am interested in that as well.

But, can someone discuss the value of Press Releases in general and how they may effect your SERPS?

I am wondering if it is worthwhile for an established site or just wasting time.
