Default Is my site in this search engine - how do I know?

What's the best way to determine if a search engine or directory has indexed my website into its database? If I simply look for my site by company name or site title, it could show up as the result of the engine's pulling from its partner search engines (such as the Open Directory) (which is not what I'm after). Any ideas?

The best way to find out is to put your domain name into a search engine and see what the results are.

Assuming your domain is mywebsavvy.com (I'm guessing from the sig), then the results from The Big Three are as follows:

http://www.google.ca/search?sourceid...websavvy%2Ecom <--- Google (no).

http://search.sympatico.msn.ca/resul...mywebsavvy.com <-- MSN (yes)

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=myw...t&cop=mss&tab= <--- Yahoo (yes).

So the answer is "in every engine except Google". Since I just visited your site with the Google toolbar running, it should get indexed sooner or later as well.

The other thing you can do to get indexed (and ranked) in Google is get your link in as many legitimate places as possible that Google is indexing. DMOZ is a directory, for example, that has a major impact on Google.

Hope this gets you started.
