Default Stupid Question?? - Your Help Please

What advertising program does one use to rank second, third, fourth etc in Google and Yahoo's search. I notice that the first site is a ranked site for a search term, followed by a number of sites (that are indented) that are obviously paid advertising of some sort.
What is the source of this paid advertising? It seems the same descriptions are used in Yahoo and Google.
Thank you in advance

Yahoo's advertising is done through Overture.

Google's is handled through AdWords.

With the exception of one or two advertisers in the blue background on Google, the rest of the paying advertisers in the right column.

Yahoo's are marked as "Sponsor Results" in the top and bottom of the organic listings.

Both programs are pay-per-clcik, meaning that advertisors bid on how much they want to spend per click 0.12, 0.46, 2.35, whatever, depending on the word or phrase and the highest bidder gets first, #2 gets second, etc.

If you are considering using these services, make sure you research them both and learn all you can about the system before you spend the first dime.

Hi flood6. I don't think it is adwords as I have an adwords campaign Google and my adds are located in the right column. These adds are located right under the top ranked page for the search term in the middle column.
I can tell they are advertising as the text is promotional by the site owner.
They appear in Google and Yahoo in exactly the same position, ie. right below the number one ranked site.

Any thoughts on this one?

Default Indented

You mean this:

?

That is just another page from the same site that ranks well for the same keyword/phrase. It might be a little more complex than that, but it is an organic listing, not paid.

Hi Flood6,
No not that. Use the search term "paper tole" in Google. Looking at the results you will see the top ranked site 1. "Paper Tole from Cut&Shape". Below this listing are 3 paid listing sites including 2."Free Virus Scan" 3. "The Tole Way" 4. "Prints for Decoupage"
These are all indented. Below this is the second url for the top ranked site 5. "Paper Tole from Cut& Shape".

I know for a fact that sites 2-4 are paid listings, but the questions is what service are they using.

This is exactly the same on Yahoo.

The adwords adds are over on the right.

What do you think.

Thanks again.

Default Spyware

This is what I see for that search on google and yahoo:

I'm thinking you've got spyware/adware, my friend. Download these free tools to get rid of it:

AdAware

SpyBot Search & Destroy

Let me know how it goes.

Hi,
Many thanks. I think you are right. It is strange as I ran spybot the other day, but I will try it again.
I tried our kids computer using another setup, and the results came back as you displayed.

Thanks again for your assistance.
