Promoting a web site is the most serious step in having an online business. You can have the best website design, graphics and so on.
Only two steps are completely left for you to face, which are the content and the site promotion.
About content, it can be well done with some effort but for site promotion you have to think carefuly before trying any step.
I tried many site promotion services including google adwords, they were effective but still costly.
Few days ago, I discovered something that might help you too. It is Alexa.com.
Yes I know that everyone on the planet knows alexa, but does everyone know alexa that well and know how to benefit from it???
It started when I downloaded the alexa toolbar inorder to see sites ranking especialy of those whom I'm willing to spend some money on buying services from them.
I found that alexa is giving alternative related sites on this toolbar for the site you are visiting, and these related sites are not displayed as ads or something, they are driven from the suggest related link box which is found in alexa's web site. You can find this suggestion box if you typed any sites' name in the search box which is found in alexa's site. Well, some people know this already, but this is not the secret yet.
The secret is When you try to add your site as a related link for a web site. Sometimes you cann't find the suggestion link when you try adding your site and sometimes you find it. Why is that? that is due to that the famous web sites already have a full related link suggestion box so there is no place for more related links and that's why you don't find the link where you can add your site.
Yes I feel that what I'm saying became more complicated to some people so I will explain in points:
1- Enter the alexa web site at www.alexa.com and type egtrix.com (for example) in the search box

2- Notice the Related Link Suggestion Box which is highlighted in red in the image below

you will not find this Related Link Suggestion Box in famous sites like yahoo.com for example as you can see in the image below


this is beacause the suggestion box is already filled with other URLs
3- To add your link to a famous site so that your site's name can be displayed on alexa's toolbar to users who are visiting yahoo or google or what ever famous sites, just type a new web site's url in the alexa's search box like egtrix.com for example and then click on the Related Link Suggestion Box link, then you'll have the page displayed on the image below

Now it's clear that you can submit your URL easily, but don't.
4- Just Notice the URL of the page you visited as in the image below


5- All you have to do now is to change the words egtrix.com in the URL to any desired website, for example yahoo.com as illustrated in the image below

and then press enter and see what you get
6- Now we have the secret revealed as we can add our url to yahoo related sites as illustrated in the image below

7- After you add your URL, you will have a confirmation email with a confirmation link that you have to follow and that's all
The benefits of that is that you will drive traffic as if you are advertising on yahoo or google for free as your link will be displayed to more than 3,000,000 alexa toolbar owners

Would it not be better to add your link to related sites. I'm not sure how all that works but I would think one if enough people do it they will fix the problem and two if people are looking for search engines and your site comes up it is not going to help very much.

This is what alexa.com has to say on the same page.

"All related link submissions will be reviewed by the Alexa editorial staff. Spamming or suggesting inappropriate links may cause your submissions to be blocked in the future."

Thanks for your reply to my topic. The point of having your site listed in the suggestion box is to have it listed within a related site. For example, my site is selling logos and websites designs so I would add it to the related links of logos.com or logodesign.com , these sites are popular sites because they would be the first choice of a customer who is searching for a logo design to buy, and I will gain traffic when having my site shown in the upper tool bar of the browser of the user who is searching for the same product I sell. And when the site is revised before adding it to the related links box, for sure it will be accepted as it is really related to the subject.
