Make it lively.
The important aspect of blogging is it should have REGULAR frequency of posting.

I think the main thing about blogging is that it be readable and either enjoyable or informative. Like any article written in a newspaper, or any commentary piece, it should grab the reader's attention, and HOLD it. Ideally, you want your readers to be inclined to bookmark your site, in hopes of your next entry being as enjoyable or informative as this one. Accomplish that, and I think you're on the road to success as a blogger. Then you just have to hold that standard, and continuously post new entries.

Sounds easy, doesn't it?

One thing for sure if it comes to blogging is that original article that really interest others. You can also post recent hot news or just share some wonderful picture and your comments about it. There are some blogs that do such thing and they have high page rank

Well I think blogging is an creative task. Bloggers that understand the importance of argumentation and anecdotes will do better than those who use the same type of sentences structure and word choice over and over.

Thanks Doc, that is helpful info about writing a blog although I don't think it sounds easy at all. I'm just finding it hard to get my head around it and the time to concentrate on it. Vicious circle I'm afraid. I've even been toying with using articles from one of these sites that provide free content in exchange for keeping their links live in the text, but I think now this is not the way to go.
