Can you tell me how link exchanges work?

Hi all
I am new to "link exhange"...I want to know about link exchange from scratch.Would you like to tell me how link exchanges work? & what is the benefits of exchanging links.Also want to know how I'll decide my link partner?

Plz advise me..

Hi Subho,

Many people choose to exchange links as it's one of the fastest and easiest way to gain links into your site. Basically, you'd find a site related to yours and contact the webmaster asking him or her to place a link to your site, and you'd do the same in return. However, due to the relatively easy nature of gaining links in this manner, search engines have devalued the power of reciprocal links. One-way, in-context links are by far and away the best type of links to hunt.

Well put tamecrow -it's also important to ensure those links to your site are aimed at the correct landing page - that is why we use long tailed URL's with page title html linked codes.
