Topsites Link Exchanges

Do these type of link exchanges work well (or at all) in building good quility links for SEO.

Aardvark Topsites PHP 5.1.2

Well, they certainly don't work very well if a click to the site presents the user with a directory listing. :) You might want to check that out.

They only help the site hosting the toplist for SEO. But members get a decent amount of traffic out of it if the toplist is popular.

The question is twofold -

I built the site, www.traveltopsite.com, because it was so easy, but I'm very weary of the spam purveyors finding it and shutting down all my sites on the server by using up my bandwidth. So in terms of building a topsites list I don't know if the Google adsense will make it have any payback. Is it worth the admin hassle?

On the other hand should I look for these type sites to get links for my content sites? Will it help their SEO enough to bother?

Thanks for any insight on top sites list site maintenance or as link building strategy.
