I used the free version of AVG. It meets my need and I am satisfied.

I have been using Nod32 ESET for a few years and there is no problem. I think there are two great anti virus programs out here. One is NOD32 and other is Kaspersky.

Kaspersky is releasing the new version (KAV 2010, KIS 2010) from September 1st, 2009.

I use Trend Micro and I highly recommend it. My home PC is clean and performance is great. I am actually planning to purchase their Antivirus + AntiSpyware 2010. And by the way, Trend Micro coupons is offering 10% off on this particular item along with the Internet Security 2010. I bet you want some huge savings!

Trend Micro is OK. There are many reputed AV software companies such as Norton, Kaspersky. bitDefender etc.

I had Norton 360 on my laptop, and uninstalled it, although I still had eight months coverage left. I am currently running Avast, and have been very happy with it. It has caught things that Norton never noticed. It's real-time, and updates daily.
Avira is another one that I have used, that I think is equally good. Both have free versions, which update regularly and are very effective.

I've tried many anti-viruses in 20 years and Nod32 ESET looks the best to me. Actually, I use Eset Smart Security that includes node32 plus firewall and antispam technology and the price is all right.

Hijackthis is an outstanding utility for troubleshooting. I have seen it identify a number of problems that no other utility has caught. I think it's a must for everyone to keep on an emergency USB.

Apologies Doc & kirsky.
Perhaps I was a little too severe, but I'd hate for someone to see HijackThis as a WPW endorsed Anti-Virus.

You're very correct in it most definitely NOT being an antivirus program! It's a great tool for seeing exactly what's going on inside your computer, but offers NO protection whatsoever. It's strictly a monitoring tool.

The OP asks "which anti-virus", not which troubleshooting utility. If an effective (that is, reliable) AV is installed and running up to date, troubleshooting utilities need never be called into play.

In a perfect world... There was a time when McAfee and Norton were the two most prevalent AV programs around, and only a very small percentage of users ran other AV programs. For a lot of reasons, they've both lost a lot of market share. I think Symantec(Norton) still offers a lot, but I have been hit with malware that got past both Norton and McAfee. I no longer trust either of them to be sufficiently up to date to catch everything. And there's always some idiot out there that gets off on designing a new virus that will sneak past AV programs. By virtue of their popularity, both probably drew a lot of that focus. Even if Norton was as effective as Avast or Avira, I'd still not use it, as it is such a resource hog.

Right you are, Doc. There is always the next big zero day threat.
My tech keeps telling me that Security Suite type software only serves to bog down the system, but I'm not taking any chances... I use a suite, not a dedicated AV. Of course, component protection is essentially the same thing (fire wall, AV, anti-malware, e-mail filtering, etc.) but I find a single product can do the job without the need for multiple updates and conflict risks. Just an AV by itself is not much protection when we look at the gaping holes (not deficiencies, just not capabilities). We need multi-faceted defenses that include all manner of attack vectors in their scope. In this light, then, there is no AV that can do the whole job, so the question is really moot. What good is even the best AV if it can't defend itself from destruction or disablement? |
|
||||
|
I'm assuming you're not running them both in AV mode simultaneously?

Sorry was unable to reply yesterday
No am not using them simultaneously Avira is main one as it proven to be the best one for me and kaspersky is my second choice and its used only in rare cases when avira fails |
|
|||
|
It is a strict rule that only one AV should be used.

Similar type programs, such as AV, tend to rely upon the same services and system interrupts which may result in conflicts at the lowest levels. This could feasibly knock out both programs at once. At least this was the case in the past.

Ya that rule is there because some AV's make conflicts with other ones and they can crash both.But u can make them work together without any conflict one of the examples is KIMS with kims u can have up to 35 different AV's at the same time i managed to have those 2 working but i don't recommend using more than one for normal users that have no experience in setting them up like u said only one is mine suggestion for normal users

I agree, innominds. There was a time when I think AVG was the better of the two, but they seem to have lost their edge in staying on top of new problems.

Low heuristic
its good against malwares that are already detected but useless against FUD malwares

No it doesn't apply to all av software AVira and kaspersky have way deep heuristic which monitors applications behavior and detect the and stop FUD malware before it do any harm Regardless of the malware is fud or not if its trying to do any suspicious activity it will be blocked and sent to their labs for investigation Quote:
IDS is intrusion detection system and it won't help u much in this case since 99% of new malwares or crypters used to make it FUD have options to trick it and bypass it

There is no 100 % secure av software. This BitDefender Awards was my main reason for mentioning bitdefender. I have also tried it myself and was impressed.
I don't use av software, but that is another story and I will not reccomend anybody else to do it.
