New report identifies dangerous Web domains

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - When surfing the Internet for safe Web sites, not all domains are equal.


Companies that assign addresses for Web sites appear to be cutting corners on security more when they assign names in certain domains than in others, according to a report to be released Wednesday by antivirus software vendor McAfee Inc.

It would seem that the internet community could get together and prevent these types of threats from happening.

If you consider the number of .com sites out there to the number of .hk, .cn, or.info .. you're comparing apples to oranges. .com has been around a lot longer. Of course the new one's are going to be more 'dangerous'. Fewer people use them. They did the same thing with porn sites.... the word went out that 15,000 porn sites were created a day.. it made it sound like the web was being over ran with them. They neglected to state that hundreds of thousands of viable websites were created daily too. It wasn't all that long ago that .uk and .ca were questionable.

Leave it to the news to get their facts and scew them accordingly.

What a crap report.

More spammers, malicious code writers and other cybercriminals can establish an online presence when domain name registry businesses cut requirements for registering a site in order to boost their profit and profile.

Are there different requirements for registering an .info or a .com?

P.S. Actually I just checked .hk & .cn registration requirements. Look how easy is it:

Furthermore a .cn domain cost $40 per year, so it is a puzzle for me why would spammers use it (assuming the report being correct).

The servers for ".hk" and ".cn" Web sites don't have to be in China; Website operators can register sites from anywhere to target different geographies.

And the servers (and registrants) of .com, .net, .org websites don't have to be ...where?
